MLB picks Wednesday 5/3: YRFI & NRFI best bets today: Wright is the right choice

Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Kyle Wright (30) leaves the game against the Houston Astros during the sixth inning at Truist Park.

If you aren’t interested in a bet that will take 9 innings, one of the shortest-lasting bets you can make in an MLB game is if a run will be scored in the first inning. All it takes is 6 outs to glory, and one swing of the bat can make or break your bet. There is also a lot of value in these bets because the odds are usually very well-priced, and if you’re not a fan of sweating out your bets for 3 hours then this one will take only about 15 minutes to win or lose. San Francisco Giants vs Houston Astros: NRFI (-130)

Odds available at FanDuel Sportsbook at time of publishing.

The Giants have been one of the worst teams in baseball against left-handed pitchers. Heading into Tuesday night’s game, San Francisco ranked 25th in batting average, 26th in on-base percentage and 26th in OPS against southpaws. On Wednesday, they have to face Houston’s ace, Framber Valdez. Admittedly, Valdez’s numbers are elevated from last year, but he’s still striking out hitters at an above-average rate as well as getting more ground balls than any other starting pitcher in baseball. If Valdez can keep the balls put in play on the ground, I wouldn’t be too surprised to see the Giants go 1-2-3 in the top of the first.

Logan Webb had a rough start to the season, which included facing the Yankees and Dodgers in his first 3 starts. However, he’s improved in each outing since then, and that includes in the first inning. Webb has tossed 3 consecutive first innings without a run which came against the Marlins, Mets and Cardinals — 3 star-studded top of the orders. And similarly to Valdez, Webb is a ground-ball pitcher. Between his changeup and sinker, Webb has had 60% of balls put in play on the ground. That will be crucial when facing a Houston lineup that has Alex Bregman and Yordan Alvarez aiming to lift the ball into the stands. I like the chances of the NRFI between two ground-ball pitchers on Wednesday night.

Atlanta Braves vs Miami Marlins: NRFI (-120)

Odds available at FanDuel Sportsbook at time of publishing.

Kyle Wright has not allowed a hit in the first inning this season. The 27-year-old is showing flashes of teammate Spencer Strider in the first frame considering opponents are 0-for-12 with 4 strikeouts against Wright. Although the top of any order features 3 of the best hitters in the lineup, that hasn’t phased Wright. The Vanderbilt grad’s most recent start was against this Miami team, but the outing was cut short due to rain. However, he was still impressive in his 3 innings, as he surrendered just 2 hits while racking up 6 punchouts. It’s hard to predict the order the Marlins will have at the top since they’ve been mixing it up recently, but Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Garrett Cooper will be there and those hitters are a combined 1-for-19 against Wright in their careers.

I thought Braxton Garrett was going to get hit hard in his last outing against the Braves. Atlanta has been mashing left-handed pitching this season and Garrett falls into that category which made me think he would be their next victim. However, he went 3 scoreless innings allowing just 1 hit before the rain ended his outing. Another surprise is how successful he’s been against Atlanta’s stellar top of the order. In their careers against Garrett, Ronald Acuna Jr, Matt Olson and Austin Riley are 1-for-16 with 4 strikeouts. Between Wright’s first-inning success and Atlanta’s struggles against Garrett, I’m looking toward the NRFI in Miami.
