New York Yankees vs Atlanta Braves: YRFI (-170)
For the second night in a row, I’m siding with each of these lineups and predicting an action-packed first inning. Yesterday we saw an 11-run offensive explosion from the Braves, knocking Yankees’ starting pitcher Clarke Schmidt from the game after tossing just 2.1 innings. Each team put up 1 run in the first inning, but the Braves opened the floodgates and jumped out to an 8-2 lead after 3 innings. The Yankees continue to send Luis Severino to the mound despite the fact he owns an 8.06 ERA, 1.88 WHIP and was just shelled by the White Sox in his last start after the Yankees opted for an opener. Nothing has gone right for Severino, and it’s hard for me to believe that a start tonight against the Braves is the remedy.
The Braves counter with 24-year-old Bryce Elder, who makes his 24th start with a 3.64 ERA and 1.24 WHIP. On paper, the numbers are respectable, but in reality, Elder is beginning to enter Luis Severino territory when looking at his recent body of work. Over his last 6 starts, Elder has pitched to a 7.94 ERA and gave up 5 earned runs in back-to-back starts. Elder doesn’t induce a whole lot of strikeouts either, just 18 over his last 35.0 innings. I’m banking on the Braves to wreak havoc, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Yankees jump out to an early lead as well.

Baltimore Orioles vs San Diego Padres: NRFI (-110)
The Baltimore Orioles have won 3 straight games, and not because they’re tearing the cover off the ball, but because of solid pitching. The Orioles’ pitching staff has given up just 4 runs over their last 4 games and I like their chances with Jack Flaherty on the mound tonight. Flaherty was traded to Baltimore in exchange for second basemen Cesar Prieto, left-handed pitcher Drew Rom and right-handed pitcher Zack Showalter, and Flaherty should be a nice addition to the starting rotation. In his first two starts for the Orioles, Flaherty registered a 3.27 ERA while recording 8 strikeouts in each outing. I’m expecting a solid outing from Flaherty, especially with the offensive struggles out of San Diego. Even with all the star power, the Padres are 1-7 over their last 8 games with a combined 15 runs scored in those 7 losses.
The one thing that has stood out for the Padres this season is their starting pitching. Their rotation owns a 3.75 ERA, good for third-best in the MLB, and tonight’s starter has played a major role in their success. Michael Wacha owns a career-best 2.84 ERA and 1.07 WHIP through 15 starts and has been virtually unhittable since the start of May. Wacha is making his first start back since experiencing right shoulder inflammation on July 4, but in 10 starts spanning from May 2 to July 1, Wacha posted a 1.19 ERA. Most important for the sake of this bet is how effective Wacha has pitched early in games. The first time through the order, opposing lineups are hitting just .184 and Wacha has yet to surrender a home run. I like both of these starters to get through the first inning unscathed.
