With plenty of MLB games taking place each day, one of the quickest bets you can make is if a run will be scored in the first inning. There is value to be had and this market has become very popular over time. If you don’t like sweating out your bets for 3 hours, this one will only take about 15 minutes. This was a very profitable market for the Pickswise MLB team in 2022, so let’s carry that momentum into the 2023 season!

New York Yankees vs Baltimore Orioles: NRFI (-120)
This has turned out to be one of the more entertaining series of the weekend, and we should see another exciting game on Sunday. Both the Yankees and Orioles are swinging the bats well in the early portion of the season. However, Sunday’s game at Camden Yards should be a pitchers’ duel, and it’ll start in the first inning.
Tyler Wells got out to a terrific start to the season, tossing 5 scoreless innings and hardly allowing any baserunners in his first outing of 2023. While Aaron Judge did have an edge over Wells in their matchups in 2022, the right-hander looks to be much improved this spring. Additionally, he also has dominated the likes of Anthony Rizzo, DJ LeMahieu and others at the top of the Yankees’ lineup. Wells is opposed by Nester Cortes Jr., who was predictably rock solid in his opening start. Cortes consistently pitched great against Baltimore last season and it showed in his dominance over Cedric Mullins, Anthony Santander and company. Look for another fast start from Nasty Nestor in this one.

Houston Astros vs Minnesota Twins: NRFI (-110)
While the Twins’ offense took center stage in a 9-6 victory over the Astros on Saturday, I expect Sunday’s contest to be about their pitching. Tyler Mahle started off his 2023 campaign with a strong result in a Twins victory over the Marlins on April 3. And while this Astros lineup is a lot more challenging on paper, they have been extremely inconsistent on a game-by-game basis this season. The top of the order also has little to no experience against Mahle, so I expect him to settle into this one at home.
On the other side, that same lack of experience could hurt this Twins lineup against Astros starter Hunter Brown. The promising prospect was roughed up a bit in his first start of the season for Houston, but I expect a cleaner effort this time out. Brown should have found his footing given that he’s gotten the jitters out of the way in his last time out. Minnesota should eventually put a few runs on the board, but I anticipate it coming in the middle innings rather than to open the game.
