We’re halfway through the work week, and one of the earlier games in today’s slate is a battle between the A’s and Tigers. Now, it’s not exactly the game of the night, but that doesn’t mean we can’t make some money from it. I’ve put together a 2-leg Same Game Parlay from FanDuel Sportsbook that pays out at over 7/1 odds, so let’s dive in! But make sure you also read our MLB picks for every game today as well.

Oakland Athletics vs Detroit Tigers Under 7.5 (+126)
Simply put, the Athletics are terrible against left-handed pitching. Since June 1, the A’s have a 49 wRC+ against left-handed pitching. Considering a 100 wRC+ is average, the A’s have really struggled against southpaws. But besides ranking 30th in wRC+ against left-handers in that time, they also rank 30th in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, OPS and more. However, saying they rank 30th in batting average in that span doesn’t express how bad they truly have been. The Oakland lineup has an absurd .161 batting average against lefties in its last 222 plate appearances.
That gets even more ridiculous when you consider that the team ranking 29th, the Mets, have a .214 batting average. The gap between the A’s and the rest of the MLB against lefties is enormous, so I’m taking advantage of that when they face Eduardo Rodriguez tonight. As for the Detroit lineup, they’re not exactly a juggernaut on offense either. Since June 1, the Tigers have just a .229 batting average — the 4th-worst in baseball. If both pitchers do their jobs, this game shouldn’t have more than a few runs.

Eduardo Rodriguez 7+ strikeouts (+350)
I was quite surprised to see the odds for E-Rod to get 7 strikeouts so high. Not only has he gotten at least 7 strikeouts in 3 of his last 5 outings, but he’s facing a lineup that is horrendous against lefties. And it’s not that the A’s are putting good swings on the ball and getting unlucky because they have a 28.8% strikeout rate against southpaws since June 1. That strikeout rate is the highest in baseball during that time, which isn’t too big of a surprise when considering Oakland’s other numbers against lefties.
On Wednesday night, the A’s will face Detroit’s ace E-Rod, who is returning from injury after missing a month. This start should serve as a soft launch back into the Tigers rotation for Rodriguez, and I expect him to have quite the day. At home this season, Rodriguez has a 30.7% strikeout rate which is substantially higher than his 25.5% season strikeout rate. Even if he only goes 5 innings, getting 7 punchouts shouldn’t be too much to ask.
