Texas Rangers -1.5 (-105) over Detroit Tigers

The Detroit Tigers continue their home stand this afternoon as they welcome the Texas Rangers to town for the first game of a 3-game set. Detroit walked it off in the bottom of the 10th inning last night – taking 3 of 4 from the Chicago White Sox – finding themselves only 1 game back of the Minnesota Twins in the AL Central. While they have some momentum on their side, they’ll be going up against the 33-19 Rangers, who have won 7 of their last 9 games. Nathan Eovaldi takes the ball for Texas, and it’s hard to argue that anyone’s pitched better than him in the month of May. Eovaldi has a 2.60 ERA on the year but has allowed just 4 earned runs across his last 5 outings, including 2 complete games and another outing he just 1 out shy from crossing the finish line.

Eovaldi’s underlying metrics are superb, and the Tigers are only hitting .228 off right-handed pitching. The matchup today clearly favors Eovaldi as he looks to add another quality outing to his resume. The Tigers counter with left-hander Matthew Boyd, who has yet to impress through 9 starts. Boyd owns a 5.74 ERA and an unimpressive 20.9% strikeout rate. The matchup is not favorable towards the southpaw either, as the Rangers have feasted on lefties this season. They rank 5th with a .292 batting average and 3rd with a .825 OPS. They’ve been very consistent at the plate, and they’re averaging 6.82 runs over their last 11 games. Eovaldi has been at the top of his game and this matchup favors Texas in all facets. Back the Rangers on the road.

Houston Astros -1.5 (+165) over Minnesota Twins

With how well Sonny Gray has pitched for the Twins to this point, I understand this might not be a popular pick, but please hear me out. Gray has drastically overperformed through 10 starts considering his 3.17 xERA is nearly 1.5 runs higher than his 1.82 ERA. The regression is already beginning to show as well with Gray pitching to a 3.72 ERA through 4 starts in May. None of those starts got too out of hand, but he’s starting to rack up the walks, and the Astros are finally playing like the defending champs. Since May 9, Houston is 14-3 and everything seems to be clicking offensively. In yesterday’s 10-1 win over the Athletics, Houston slugged 7 homers with 2 coming off the bat of Yordan Alvarez, while Jose Abreu finally broke through with his 1st of the year.

J.P. France takes the ball for Houston, and he’s provided some quality innings with his small workload. Aside from a short start against the Cubs, France has gone at least 5.0 innings in his other 3 outings and hasn’t allowed more than 1 earned run. Even if France doesn’t go too deep in this game, I have faith in the Astros’ bullpen considering they’ve given up fewer runs than any other pen in the league. I also don’t have a tremendous amount of trust in the Twins offensively. They’re batting .233 off right-handed pitching and have only scored more than 3 runs on 2 occasions across their last 7 games. I’m backing red-hot Houston at Minute Maid Park.

New York Yankees ML (+110) over Seattle Mariners

The New York Yankees hope to remain hot when they take a trip out West and begin their series with the Seattle Mariners. New York took the last 2 games of their series against the San Diego Padres over the weekend, which included a 7-run 3rd inning in yesterday’s 10-7 win. Tonight, they’ll send Domingo Germán to the mound in what’s been a complete turnaround after a couple rough starts in April. Germán appears to have settled in, pitching to a 1.64 ERA across 4 starts in May, and will make his first start since being suspended by Major League Baseball for using a foreign substance on the mound after sitting down the first 9 Toronto Blue Jays’ batters on May 16.

The Mariners counter with a right-hander of their own when 24-year-old rookie Bryce Miller toes the rubber. Miller is Seattle’s top pitching prospect and he’s looked extremely comfortable since making his Major League debut on May 2. So comfortable that Miller has 5 quality starts to begin his MLB career and is the 1st pitcher to go a minimum 6.0 innings without allowing more than 4 hits in his initial 5 appearances since 1901. It’s an incredible accomplishment, but I’d be remised to not point out that 2 of those starts came against the A’s and another against the Tigers – both of whom rank in the bottom 3 of runs scored. That being said, the Yankees are a much deeper lineup and should be a tough test for the young pitcher. I’m siding with the Yankees to make it 3 wins in a row.
