I went 2-1 with my 3 NBA picks in Friday’s article taking my record to 16-11, so let’s try to match or exceed that once more with 3 more plays for Monday’s MLB slate.

Today I like a run-line pick, a first-inning prop and a play on a total, so let’s get into explaining the reasoning behind those picks.

Braves -1.5 over Marlins (-120)

The Braves have lost 4 straight games and just got swept at home by the Astros. They are listed as heavy favorites to take their frustrations out on the Miami Marlins. What was most surprising about the Braves being swept was their offensive struggles as they scored just 9 runs over the 3 games. That should take a turn tonight. Atlanta went 13-6 last season against Miami overall, including going 6-3 at Truist Park.
The Braves outscored the Marlins 44-28 at home last season. Tonight’s starters, Spencer Strider for Atlanta and Edward Cabrera for Miami, don’t have any significant track record against their opponent, but Strider is excellent at home, striking out 18 batters in 10 innings so far this year and 114 batters in just 70.2 innings last year. Usually, laying the run-and-a-half gets you plus money, but not tonight. I’ll lay it anyway with the Braves.

NRFI in Tigers vs Brewers (-115)

The Tigers are in Milwaukee to face the Brewers and it’s a pair of teams that are on an NRFI run. The Tigers on a run of not scoring a first-inning run in 9 of their last 10 games. The Tigers offense is dead last in batting average and runs scored in Major League Baseball. They will be facing Colin Rea, who poses a bit of a question mark just because he hasn’t pitched all that often. Rea is making his third start of the year after missing all of last season. The former reliever turned starter is allowing opposing hitters just a .189 batting average on the season, although he did give up a first-inning run in his first start against San Diego.Detroit counters with Matthew Boyd, who hasn’t allowed a first-inning run this season in 3 starts.

Also, a reliever-turned-starter, Boyd’s opponent batting average is .222 and he has 11 strikeouts in 14 innings of work on the season. Coincidentally, the last 2 times the Tigers have scored a first-inning run, Boyd was the starter. But the Brewers are on a NRFI streak of their own, failing to score a run in their half of the first in 6 of their last 7 games. This is moderately priced at -115. Let’s go for a quick and easy play with the NFRI between Detroit and Milwaukee.

Under 8 in Rockies vs Guardians (-105)

The Guardians welcome the Rockies to Cleveland, where the Guardians are playing just their 10th home game this season. Cal Quantrill takes the ball for Cleveland and he’s had only 1 home start this year and it’s almost May. Last year at Progressive Field Quantrill went 9-0 with a respectable 3.28 ERA. This year, he hasn’t been bad by any stretch and he’s coming off a scoreless 6-inning, 4-hit performance.

The Rockies will start Austin Gomber. To put it plainly, he’s terrible. Gomber is 0-4 on the season with an ERA over 12 and he’s allowed 5 home runs in four starts. However, these are two of the worst offenses in baseball. Colorado has the 5th-fewest home runs on the season and Cleveland has the 2nd-fewest. They are also both in the bottom 10 in MLB in runs scored. If this game goes over, it’s because the Guardians offense did all the heavy lifting. Let’s go under 8.
