NBA teams love to trade and NBA fans love a blockbuster deal on the eve of the NBA Draft. Everyone got what they wanted on Wednesday when the Boston Celtics, Washington Wizards and Memphis Grizzlies pulled off a huge 3-way trade involving Kristaps Porzingis, Marcus Smart, 3 other players and 3 first-round picks. Here’s how it went down and what the moves mean for each team’s NBA odds next season. If you’re new to NBA betting, you can also check out our guide on How to bet on NBA games in 2023.

What happened in the 3-way trade for Kristaps Porzingis and Marcus Smart?

Three-way NBA trades can be tricky to explain, but here’s what each team has walked away with:

Boston Celtics receive:
C/F Kristaps Porzingis
2023 first-round pick (#25)
2024 first-round pick (via Golden State; top-4 protected)

Washington Wizards receive:
G Tyus Jones
F Danilo Gallinari
C Mike Muscala
2023 first-round pick (#35)

Memphis Grizzlies receive:
G Marcus Smart

What the trade means for the Celtics’ NBA odds

The Celtics have cashed in on Smart while he can still command a decent haul and have moved up 10 spots in tonight’s first round, as well as landing Kristaps Porzingis, who should be the long-term replacement for veteran Al Horford. Porzingis was always a good target in NBA prop bets and that should be no different next season.

Boston is the favorite with FanDuel Sportsbook to win the 2023-24 NBA Championship, with odds of +460, just ahead of new champions the Denver Nuggets at +470, with the Milwaukee Bucks at +500. What the trade means for the Wizards’ NBA odds

Tyus Jones is the key player in this trade for Washington, which needed to move on from Porzingis at this stage as part of its rebuilding process after missing the playoffs last season. That process is likely to take some time, as seen by the Wizards’ NBA Championship odds of +50000.

What the trade means for the Grizzlies’ NBA odds

The Grizzles should be delighted to have acquired Smart, who was the Celtics’ longest-serving player and a key part of their defense. Some may question the price they paid but it looks a solid move. The Grizzlies are at +2600 odds for the NBA title but will be without the suspended Ja Morant for 25 games. Can Smart light things up and prove to be a contender for NBA MVP next season?
