Is Sports Betting Legal In Louisiana?

Yes. Retail sports betting has been live for several months, and mobile sports betting officially launched on Friday, January 28. In June 2021, Gov. John Bel Edwards paved the way for the regulatory process to get started by signing the third of three sports betting bills into law. In August, the Louisiana Gaming Control Board approved emergency rules for the sports betting industry to allow casinos and horse racing tracks to begin applying with the Louisiana State Police for sports betting licenses. A short time later, the first legal sports bet in Louisiana was placed on October 6 at Paragon Casino Resort in Marksville.

You can take advantage of the great promotional offer from FanDuel Sportsbook below, where you can bet just $1 on the NFL team of your choice to win their Championship game, and if they do, you’ll win $125!

Can I Bet On My Phone Anywhere In Louisiana?

No. There will be some restrictions as to where mobile bets can be placed in Louisiana. In November 2020, voters in 55 Louisiana parishes voted to legalize sports betting. A total of 9 parishes voted against it.

Geofencing technology will be used to allow bets in legal parishes and block bets from parishes that did not legalize sports betting. Geofencing is already being used in areas of the country where online betting has been launched. For example, a bettor in Illinois can place a mobile wager, but if they drive across the state border to Missouri, they will no longer be able to place a bet. Conversely, people in Missouri can simply drive across the state border to Illinois to bet on sports on their mobile devices.

The same concept is applied to Louisiana online sports betting. In Louisiana, bettors will have to be in one of the 55 parishes where voters approved sports betting in order to place a mobile wager. No one can place sports wagers from these 9 parishes:

  • Caldwell
  • Catahoula
  • Franklin
  • Jackson
  • LaSalle
  • Sabine
  • Union
  • West Carrol
  • Winn

Bettors in these parishes will have to drive to a parish that voted yes to legalizing sports betting in order to place a mobile wager.
