We’re expecting points to be scored in this matchup, and it wouldn’t be surprising if the 49ers attacked a Chargers run defense that is still struggling. Despite its best efforts in the offseason, this Los Angeles defense has not been stout, which could be a major issue against a 49ers offense that has a ton of talent and versatility across the board. With a raucous crowd expected for Sunday Night Football, this one could get away from the visitors if they aren’t careful. This should be a fascinating contest, so let’s get into our expert’s predictions.

Los Angeles Chargers vs San Francisco 49ers point spread pick: 49ers -7 (-110)
Justin Herbert and the Chargers are coming off a road win over Atlanta, yet the spread has moved sharply against them from where it opened. Los Angeles now finds itself an underdog of a full touchdown, in part due to a rash of injuries on offense. Keenan Allen and Mike Williams both appear set to miss this one, and their O-line is also really banged up. San Francisco, on the other hand, just had a bye week to heal up, and when Kyle Shanahan has an extra week to prepare you know the offensive game-plan is going to be top-notch. Shanahan loves to run the ball, and the Chargers have one of the league’s most vulnerable run defenses. Christian McCaffrey was able to use the bye week to fully familiarize himself with the 49ers’ playbook, and he should be in for a big day.
Herbert’s numbers have dipped this season, in part due to the injuries to his supporting cast and in part due to a coaching staff that doesn’t put him in the best situations. The lack of a consistent ground game has been a factor too, as Austin Ekeler has topped 60 yards only once this season. I lean toward laying the points with the 49ers, but I’d prefer to use San Francisco as a teaser leg to get them through all the key numbers and below the -3, since the Chargers always seem to manage to keep things close.

Los Angeles Chargers vs San Francisco 49ers Over/Under totals pick: Over 45.5 (-110)
There are reasons to believe that both teams can have success on offense in this game. For starters, I don’t have any confidence in the Chargers’ defense. Big free-agent signing J.C. Jackson was proving to be a disappointment at cornerback before suffering a season-ending injury and Joey Bosa is still sidelined, leaving the front seven lacking punch. And Los Angeles is still soft up the middle and susceptible to the run, which any Kyle Shanahan-coached team is going to take advantage of.
On the flip side, the 49ers are dealing with a ton of injuries in their secondary. Justin Herbert hasn’t taken the third-year leap many were expecting due to tough circumstances around him, but he’s still one of the most talented quarterbacks in the league. The 49ers are stout at stopping the run, so the coaching staff should hopefully let him air it out. If they do, this one could turn into a shootout.
