The XFL 2020 league is underway as eight teams along with hundreds of players are looking to showcase to the world and more importantly NFL scouts they still have what it takes to make it in the big leagues. With two weeks already over in the new XFL season, some players are already taking the newfound league by storm. One of those players being Wide Receiver Nelson Spruce as he has been the bright spot of the winless Los Angeles Wildcats team. Spruce already has been a popular name in the LA area as he went undrafted in the 2016 NFL Draft and signed with the Los Angeles Rams.
It did not take long for the NFL rookie to make a huge impression with the Rams and the die-hard fans as he caught six passes for 51 yards and a touchdown in the Rams first preseason game back in Los Angeles to defeat the Dallas Cowboys. However, injuries hurt Spruce’s chances to remain with the Rams as a knee injury would have him sidelined for the remainder of the preseason and end his short career with the Rams.
After healing up, Spruce would bounce around from the Bears, Chiefs, and Chargers before taking his talents to the short-lived AAF. In the short six games with the San Diego Fleet, he finished fifth in the league with 426 receiving yards and second in receptions with 38. Clearly he still has the ability to improve a team and it is showing on the Los Angeles Wildcats.
During week one, Spruce did not waste any time as he was the XFL’s first wide receiver with a 100-yard game as he finished with 103 receiving yards on 11 receptions. Spruce than returned home back to Los Angeles for the Wildcats home opener against the Dallas Renegades as chants of “SPRUUUUCE” were heard throughout the game as he finished with 89 yards and 2 TDs. Without an injury, Spruce has shown he can be that consistent wide receiver that can get the job done. He is the perfect third-down receiver as well as deep man from this bomb below.
Today is National Nelson Spruce Day.

Nelson Spruce is flat-out the best wide receiver in the XFL and deserves that second-change in the NFL. Without a doubt, Spruce will be getting phone calls in the offseason as every single team should be calling him up. Spruce is a one of a kind player and plays with passion. He clearly has a fan base already and it showed when he was asked about his chants during the press conference against the Renegades.
“I think part of that is being a hometown guy and having played for the Rams and Chargers for a little bit. It’s cool to just get that appreciation and still do it playing football.”
In just two XFL games, Spruce has 17 catches for 192 yards and two touchdowns. This is just the beginning for someone who has a lot left in the tank.
