KBO picks and predictions
Thursday’s slate features plenty of opportunities for value. Let’s dive into the day’s best bets.
NC Dinos vs Samsung Lions ML (+106)
The NC Dinos were overwhelmed on Wednesday morning which resulted in a 11-5 loss to the Samsung Lions. The Dinos continue to struggle this season, and now have a record of 9-19 on the season. They are clearly the worst team in the KBO right now and as a result, sit in last place. They will be scheduled to start Song Myung-Gi on Thursday, who is 2-1 on the season. He has an ERA of 3.67, so he has not been the best, but he has been decent. In 5 starts this season, Myung-Gi has allowed 11 earned runs over 27.0 innings.
With the win on Wednesday, the Samsung Lions are now 12-16 on the year and sit in 7th place. They will counter with Hwang Dong-Jae, who is 3-0 on the season and he has an ERA of 1.80. In 3 appearances (2 starts), Dong-Jae has allowed just 2 earned runs over 10.0 innings.
The Dinos are not a team that can be trusted right now, so it is weird to see them as the favorites. The Lions have the better offense and the edge in starting pitching, so backing them to win will be the play.
Doosan Bears vs LG Twins ML (-182)
The Doosan Bears managed to win on Wednesday, beating the LG Twins by a score of 5-2. Doosan is now 15-12 on the season and are currently in 4th place in the league standings. They will be scheduled to start Choi Seung-Young on Thursday morning, who is 1-1 with an ERA of 4.05. In 10 appearances this season (1 start), he has allowed 6 earned runs over 13.1 innings. It is also worth noting that he has had 2 appearances in relief against the Twins, where he did not allow a run over 3.1 innings.
With the loss on Wednesday, the LG Twins slipped to 15-13 on the season. The Twins are now sitting in 5th place in the standings and hold a 2.5 game advantage over 6th place. They will counter with Casey Kelly, who is 3-0 on the season and has an ERA of 2.74. In 4 starts this season, Kelly has allowed 7 earned runs over 23.0 innings. He has also faced the Bears once this season, allowing 1 earned run over 6.0 innings.
These teams are relatively evenly matched, but the gap in starting pitching looks to be the biggest difference. Kelly has been much too solid this season to not back, therefore backing the Twins will be the play.
Kiwoom Heroes vs Kia Tigers – Under 8.5 runs (-122)
The total actually looks to be the better play here with 2 decent pitchers set to take the mound. As mentioned before, Kim Seon-Gi has very little innings to go off of, but he did well enough in his lone relief appearance to believe he can slow down this Tigers’ offense. As for Lee Eui-Lee, he has only allowed more than 3 earned runs in a game once, and even his start against the Heroes was not terrible. The Heroes also have an offense that ranks 7th in total runs and while the Tigers’ offense ranks 4th, they have still been known to be inconsistent. The total stayed under on Wednesday with starters worse than what are scheduled for Thursday, therefore backing another low scoring game will be the play.
