KBO picks and predictions
Thursday’s slate features plenty of opportunities for value. Let’s dive into the day’s best bets.
NC Dinos ML over Kia Tigers (-140)
The Kia Tigers lost to the LG Twins 11-2 on Wednesday morning. They are now 62-69-1 on the season and have lost 9 games in a row. Because they have lost that many, they are now just 0.5 games ahead of the Dinos for 5th place. The Tigers will start Yang Hyeon-Jong, who is 11-7 on the season and has an ERA of 3.92. In 28 starts Hyeon-Jong has allowed 72 earned runs over 165.1 innings.
The NC Dinos won their game on Wednesday morning, beating the Doosan Bears by a score of 5-1. They are now 59-67-3 this year and are still in 6th place in the league standings. The Dinos will counter with Koo Chang-Mo, who is 9-4 and has an ERA of 1.85. In 16 starts he has allowed 19 earned runs over 92.2 innings.
Hyeon-Jong has been decent in 2022, but Chang-Mo has been much more consistent and dominant on the season as a whole. For that reason, backing the Dinos will be the play as they look to move into the playoff picture and continue the Tigers’ horrific losing streak.
KT Wiz vs Samsung Lions – Over 9.5 runs (-112)
The total looks to be the better play given the form of both starters recently. So Hyeong-Jun has allowed 10 runs (8 earned) over 16.2 innings in his last 3 starts. In 2 starts against the Lions he has allowed 4 earned runs over 14.0 innings.
On the other side, Hwang Dong-Jae has allowed 13 earned runs over 15.2 innings in his last 3 starts. In 2 appearances against the KT Wiz (1 start) he has allowed 15 earned runs over 6.1 innings. The struggles for Dong-Jae have been far too great this year to trust him. That and the fact that Hyeong-Jun has not been the most consistent recently makes the over worth a play.
LG Twins ML over Lotte Giants (-130)
The Lotte Giants beat the Hanwha Eagles 9-0 on Wednesday. They are now 60-71-4 and are in 7th place in the league standings. The Giants will start Charlie Barnes, who is 11-12 and has an ERA of 3.74. In 30 starts he has allowed 75 earned runs over 180.1 innings.
The LG Twins beat the Kia Tigers 11-2 on Wednesday morning. They are now 79-47-2 in 2022 and are still in 2nd place in the league standings. The Twins will counter with Im Chan-Kyu. He is 5-9 and has an ERA of 4.80. In 19 starts Chan-Kyu has allowed 45 earned runs over 84.1 innings.
Barnes has been the better pitcher for most of the season but has struggled recently. Meanwhile, Chan-Kyu has put together several solid starts in a row — plus the Twins are still fighting for the top seed in the league standings. For that reason, backing the Twins will be the play.
