KBO picks and predictions
Saturday’s slate features plenty of opportunities for value. Let’s dive into the day’s best bets.
Kia Tigers -1.5 (-118) vs Hanwha Eagles
The Kia Tigers crushed the Hanwha Eagles on Friday morning, beating them 13-2. The Tigers have now won 3 games in a row and are 13-16 on the season. They are currently in 8th place, but could potentially move up to 7th if they win on Saturday and get some help. The Tigers will start Yang Hyeon-Jong, who is 1-2 on the season, but has a stellar ERA of 1.86. In 6 starts this season, Hyeon-Jong has allowed 8 earned runs over 38.2 innings.
The Hanwha Eagles lost their 2nd consecutive game by double-digits on Friday and continue to look like one of the worst teams in the KBO. They are now 11-19 on the season and are in 9th place. The Eagles will counter with Park Yoon-Chul, who is 0-1 on the season and has an ERA of 2.66. In 5 starts this season, Yoon-Chul has allowed 6 earned runs over 20.1 innings. He does have 1 start against the Tigers, where he allowed 2 earned runs over 3.2 innings.
Both pitchers have been solid, but the main concern is that Yoon-Chul has not pitched past the 5th inning this season. Because Hyeon-Jong has been able to go deep into games, and due to the fact that the Eagles have been hammered over the last 2 games, backing the Tigers on the run line will be the play on Saturday.
KT Wiz vs Doosan Bears ML (-152)
The Doosan Bears were shut out on Friday, losing to the KT Wiz by a score of 6-0. The Bears are now 16-13 on the season and are now in 4th place in the standings. They will be projected to start Robert Stock, who is 4-0 on the season and has an ERA of 1.64. In 6 starts, he has allowed 7 earned runs over 38.1 innings. In 1 start against the KT Wiz, Stock allowed 1 earned run over 6.0 innings.
With the win on Friday, the KT Wiz are now 14-15 on the season and sit in 6th place. They will counter with Odrisamer Despaigne, who is 2-3 on the season and has an ERA of 3.63. In 6 starts this season, he has allowed 14 earned runs over 34.2 innings. He is coming off a poor start against the Kiwoom Heroes, where he allowed 5 earned runs over 5.0 innings.
Even with the Bears being shut out on Friday, they look to be the side worth backing on Saturday. Stock has been lights out all season and should help the Bears get back into the win column. For that reason, backing the Bears will be the play.
SSG Landers vs Kiwoom Heroes – Under 6.5 runs (-108)
The total actually looks to be the better play on Saturday given the fact that both pitchers have been elite. They each have had just 1 game where they struggled, but they both are more than capable of putting together a good outing here. Even An Woo-Jin, who struggled to shut down this offense should be expected to repeat that performance. The SSG Landers do average 4.6 runs per game, while the Heroes average 3.9 runs per game. The Heroes may have scored 9 runs on Friday, but they scored just once in Thursday’s, so we should not expect their bats to remain hot. The SSG Landers scored 14 runs on Thursday, but this was against a terrible Hanwha Eagles team, so they are likely going to only be able to score a couple here against a very good pitcher. For that reason, backing the under will be the play on Saturday morning.
