The 2022 season was a miserable one for the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts haven’t reached the same heights following the retirement of Andrew Luck, and it bottomed out last fall with an abysmal 4-12-1 season and a top 5 pick in the NFL Draft. Will the addition of Anthony Richardson give Indianapolis new life heading into the 2023 season, or will this year be just as terrible as the previous season as the Colts begin the long rebuilding process? Let’s take a look at some of the odds and best bets to be made on the Indianapolis Colts in 2023.

Indianapolis Colts 2022 NFL season recap

The Colts entered last season as too good of a team to tear it down, but nowhere near a contender in a loaded AFC filled with great quarterbacks across the board. This led into a season where Indianapolis was actually the AFC South favorite in September over the likes of Tennessee and Jacksonville. However, all it took was a couple of weeks to see that the Colts were not who most pundits thought they would be during Training Camp. After starting 3-2-1, Indianapolis dropped 10 of its next 11 games and ended up with the #4 pick in the NFL Draft. It marked the end of the Matt Ryan era as the Colts opted to go in a new direction at quarterback going forward.

Indianapolis Colts 2023 NFL season predictions

This is a fascinating team from a betting perspective because we don’t really have any idea what we’re going to get. The Colts are going to be implementing a brand new offense with rookie phenom Anthony Richardson now at the controls under center. Richardson is about as different a player stylistically as you can be from the likes of Matt Ryan, Carson Wentz and Phillip Rivers before him, which makes projecting Indianapolis’ season so compelling. This should be one of the worst teams in the AFC, but I still see some value on the Colts to slightly outpace their preseason expectations.

Best bet: Indianapolis Colts over 4.5 wins (-118)

Before breaking into my numbers and research on this Colts team, I actually thought I was going to lean toward the under. But given how nicely the schedule shapes up at multiple junctures throughout the season and my belief in Richardson as a potential franchise-lifting quarterback down the road, it’s hard not to take the over at this number.

The fact of the matter is very few quarterbacks have ever come into the NFL with the physical profile of Richardson, if any. He should be put in a decent position to succeed in Shane Steichen’s offense, who just buoyed Jalen Hurts to a career-best season. Even if Richardson struggles in the passing game, read option plays with Jonathan Taylor in the backfield will be very hard to stop. If Richardson doesn’t pop this season, the win total might end up coming down to a Week 18 home game against the Texans, where I still think the Colts would be favored to pick up their 5th victory.

Indianapolis Colts season record prediction: 5-12

The biggest feather in Indianapolis’ cap is the schedule, with the Colts drawing the putrid NFC South in addition to their own weak division. Outside of Jacksonville, it’s not like the other 2 teams have clear and obvious talent advantages over Indy. It’s fair to expect the Colts to grab 2 wins in the division, and they’ll also get to host the Buccaneers, Raiders and Rams, while also traveling to Carolina and Atlanta. However, wins should be hard to come by the rest of the way, as 4 games against the AFC North should put this team to the test. Overall, I could see the Colts winning 6 or 7 games if things break their way, but I’ll opt for the safer option at 5-12.
