After falling to the Cincinnati Bengals in last season’s AFC Championship game, the Kansas City Chiefs exacted some revenge on Sunday by knocking off the Bengals at home to advance to the Super Bowl. This marks the third Super Bowl appearance in the young career of Patrick Mahomes, who is well on his way to becoming an all-time great at the quarterback position. Kansas City has established itself as the premier organization in football over the last 5 years and another Super Bowl ring would only solidify that status.

How many times have the Kansas City Chiefs played in the Super Bowl?
With the win over the Bengals, Kansas City will now be playing in its fifth Super Bowl in franchise history. This is also the third time in the last 4 seasons that Andy Reid, Mahomes and company are back on the NFL’s biggest stage. The last time the Chiefs played in a Super Bowl was in 2021 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which resulted in a 31-9 defeat. Kansas City previously played in Super Bowl 54 in February of 2020, beating the 49ers thanks to a second-half comeback led by Mahomes. That game not only marked the Chiefs’ first Super Bowl title since 1970, but it was their first appearance as well.
How many times have the Kansas City Chiefs lost the Super Bowl?
While the Chiefs knocked off the 49ers in February of 2020, Kansas City ultimately fell to Tom Brady and the Buccaneers the following year to avoid becoming repeat champions. That was one of 2 Super Bowl losses over the course of the last 56 years for this franchise. Prior to their championship in 2020, just getting to the Super Bowl had been a hardship for Kansas City. In fact, the only other time the Chiefs lost in the title game was on January 15, 1967 to the Green Bay Packers in what was the inaugural edition of the Super Bowl. Both of Kansas City’s defeats in its short Super Bowl history came by at least 22 points.

Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl appearances
Prior to the 3 appearances in the Reid and Mahomes era, Kansas City previously made the Super Bowl in both 1967 and 1970. While they were defeated pretty handily in 1967 by Vince Lombardi’s Green Bay Packers, the Chiefs did secure their first Super Bowl victory in 1970 over the Minnesota Vikings. It would then take another 50 years for Kansas City to get back to football’s biggest game, but the Chiefs have now qualified 3 times since the 2019-20 NFL season.
