2:49 pm Pimlico (Race 8) – Atone 9/5 (2-star play)

Race 8 on Pimlico’s Preakness Stakes card is the Grade 3 Dinner Party, which features a field of 7 older horses going to post over a mile and an eighth trip on the turf and they all have to go some to beat the Michael Maker trained Atone. He finished third in this race last year and began this campaign with a rallying victory in the Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup Turf, so if he turns up in that kind of form then he should win.

4:12 pm Pimlico (Race 10) – Beer Can Man 8/1 (1-star play)

The Turf Sprint Stakes is a hotly contested affair with Nothing Better and Artemus Citylimits both having solid chances, but I like the gelding drawn in the outside post, Beer Can Man, who will come on from a recent fifth-place effort in an Allowance at Keeneland. Flavien Prat’s mount is a 2-time stakes winner with some great form in the book and his latest start was his first for 14 months, so he should take a good step forward from that and can take this at a nice price.

5:51 pm Pimlico (Race 12) – A Western Yarn 10/1 (1-star play)

Arnaud Delacour’s A Western Yarn is an improving son of Eastwood and he recorded a career-best speed figure when chasing home the classy pair of Talk Of The Nation and Mo Stash in a stakes race at Tampa Bay in March. I fancy him to hit the board here. He tried to go wire-to-wire and just tired late on but he did keep on all the way to the line and is well drawn in 3, so if his jockey can get him out and into the lead early then they could take some catching.

7:01 pm Pimlico (Race 13: Preakness Stakes) – Mage 8/5 (2-star play)

Now it’s time for the $1,500.000 Grade 1 Preakness Stakes. Brad Cox’s First Mission is to be feared as is Red Route One, who can outrun his odds, but this can go to the Kentucky Derby winner Mage — who battled tenaciously to win the ‘Run For The Roses’. The frightening thing with this horse is that he is still improving and he showed all the attributes of a star performer last time out so he can follow up here before a potential tilt at the Triple Crown.
