Horse Racing picks for Day 1 of the Breeders' Cup on Friday, November 5: Portfolio Company takes it

Horse Racing on dirt at Santa Anita

There is plenty of great horse racing action to look forward to across America on Friday, including at Del Mar race track. The Breeders’ Cup will get underway, and we have a handful of great plays for you. We have been crushing it of late, too, so hopefully we can keep the momentum going as we enter the weekend.

Let’s dive in and explain the reasoning behind each of today’s Breeders’ Cup picks.

5:50pm Del Mar (Race 6) – Averly Jane 5/2

Unbeaten in four starts the daughter of Midshipman is proven in stakes company having won her last three starts including over five-and-one-half-furlongs in the Indian Summer Stakes on a good turf track at Keeneland last month. Handled the switch to turf in fine style when making all on that occasion and looks capable of employing similar tactics to provide handler Wesley Ward with a third consecutive victory in this race following the victories of Four Wheel Drive and Golden Pal.

6:30pm Del Mar (Race 7) – Echo Zulu 4/5

Maintained her unbeaten record when registering a second win at the highest level in making all to take the Frizette Stakes over a mile at Belmont Park at the start of last month having previously taken out the seven furlong Spinaway Stakes at Saratoga. The daughter of Gun Runner comes into this contest as one of the New York circuits biggest hope and can maintain her unbeaten record following a 50.40 four furlong work at this venue last weekend.

7:10pm Del Mar (Race 8) – Mise En Scene 6/1

Winner of her first two starts including the Group 3 Prestige Stakes over seven furlongs on good going at Goodwood back in August the daughter of Siyouni lost her unbeaten record when finishing fourth in the Fillies Mile over a mile at Newmarket last month. Lost her place mid-race on that occasion but has top jockey Oisin Murphy back in the saddle for this contest and she is taken to provide handler James Ferguson with a first Breeders’ Cup win.

7:50pm Del Mar (Race 9) – Commandperformance 4/1

It’s unfortunate that Jack Christopher misses out but Commandperformance, runner-up to him in the Champagne Stakes at Belmont over a mile, should be able to take advantage. That second to Jack Christopher by Commandperformance was run in an exceptionally fast time and he is bred to be suited by this added stamina. The Bob Baffert runners need taking seriously as well.

8:30pm Del Mar (Race 10) – Portfolio Company 6/1

A debut winner over a mile-and-one-sixteenth in a Saratoga maiden special weight in July the selection has placed second in Graded company on both subsequent starts including when a head second in the Pilgrim Stakes over the same distance at Belmont Park last month. Flavien Prat takes over in the saddle and the son of Kitten’s Joy is taken to register a first victory at the highest level in a highly competitive renewal of this turf contest.
