There is plenty of great horse racing action to look forward to across America on Thursday, including at Saratoga race track. Here are four runners whom we think look to be a class above the opposition in their respective races. Let’s dive in and take a look at some potentially lucrative plays.
3:55 pm Saratoga (Race 6) – Derrynane +250
A daughter of Quality Road, Christophe Clement’s beautifully bred filly has shown plenty of ability in the mornings at Saratoga. Those with experience in this contest don’t set a daunting standard and Clement can ready his horses first time up, even if they do tend to improve for it. Drawn well in gate three, Joel Rosario can use the early speed she’s flashed in her workouts to lead this field a merry dance.
4:29 pm Saratoga (Race 7) – Traffic Lane +300
Just the one win in seven starts for this filly, but she’s contested much better company than this since graduating at Aqueduct in November. That includes a pair of stakes tilts, most recently the Grade 2 Demoiselle. She was last seen at Belmont in a $72,000 claiming race and despite finishing last of seven, she shaped fairly over a trip that perhaps stretched her. She’s now down in grade and a return to the sprinting trips is another big positive. Still largely unexposed, she has an excellent chance of returning to winning ways.
5:39 pm Saratoga (Race 9) – Ice Princess +160
Placed at Stakes level on multiple occasions, Danny Gargan’s filly has been unlucky not to break her 2021 duck thus far. She’s contested a trio of allowance races, latterly off a three-month layoff at Belmont. She didn’t have the best of passages in that contest, finishing fourth, but she’s evidently capable of better than that. Her best form sets a daunting standard for these opponents and her sole previous run at Saratoga resulted in a narrow second in a stakes contest. With race fitness now on her side, she can return to winning ways.
6:13 pm Saratoga (Race 10) – Orma +600
Showing ability in three opening starts, this daughter of Posse wouldn’t need to improve much to be graduating. Most recently, she finished a very good third at Belmont over six furlongs, weakening late on after making a wide bid. Cutting back slightly in distance is an obvious positive, on that evidence, and this race is certainly no tougher than last time. Her recent work has suggested she’s continued progressing and she looks overpriced at her current odds.
