3:30 pm Santa Anita (Race 1) – Hejazi 4/5 (3-star play)
An expensive two-year-old in training purchase at $3,500,000 when bought at Fasig Tipton last year the son of Bernardini has shown solid placed form in all three starts to date. Runner-up in two Del Mar maiden special weights the pick delivered an eight-and-three-quarter-length third in the Grade 1 American Pharoah Stakes over a mile-and-one-sixteenth here in October. Shorter distance here is no issue and Bob Baffert’s charge looks up to breaking his maiden at the fourth attempt.
3:59 pm Santa Anita (Race 2) – A Broken Breeze 8/5 (2-star play)
A five time winner the selection showed good form at this level when seven-and-a-half-lengths second in a mile contest here in October. Joined current trainer Andrew Harris following that effort and delivered a respectable four-and-a-half-length fifth in a higher grade claimer over six-and-a-half-furlongs at Los Alamitos a month ago. The selection is a tactically versatile sort and with the step up in distance no issue she is taken to provide jockey Edwin A Maldonado with a winner.
4:59 pm Santa Anita (Race 4) – Looks Rare 2/1 (2-star play)
Showed plenty of ability when registering a second place finish in a six-and-a-half-furlong $50,000 maiden claiming contest at Del Mar when debuting in November. Changed trainer since that effort and missed an engagement in a maiden special weight here at the end of last month. Comes into this event on the back of a 59 second five furlong work at San Luis Rey a week ago and is taken to break his maiden with Frankie Dettori booked to ride.
