Race 5 at Gulfstream Park is a $51,000 Allowance Optional Claimer taking place over a mile distance on the turf track and one who catches the eye is Cashier Check in gate 2. This son of Midnight Storm is a multiple course winner and could be about to hit a rich vein of form if his most recent second in a Starter Optional Claimer is anything to go by.

A field of 7 older horses go to post for this open looking 5-furlong Claimer in which a case can be made for most of the runners in this field, but none more than the Straight Shot — who has been knocking on the door in recent starts. He has only been beaten a head and half a length at Tampa Bay the last twice and this switch back to Gulfstream Park could prove the difference as he is a winner here.

The penultimate event at Gulfstream Park is an Allowance for the female division, where they all have their work cut out to beat Steven Dwoskin’s Starship Aurora — who broke her maiden in determined fashion last time out and is one to keep on side. Miguel Vasquez’s mount was second on debut here before winning over course and distance and the general feeling is that she could be pretty useful.

Jose Garoffalo’s Girl Bye is an improving daughter of Cajun Breeze who has notched up form figures of 33 in this Claiming grade, at this course, and looks to have found a good opportunity to gain her second career victory. If she replicates her latest effort where she was keeping on well over course and distance she will go very close, so if jockey Kevin Krigger can get a nice run through on her then she can take the finale.
