Horse Racing picks for Del Mar race track on Sunday, September 11: It's a Gas, Gas, Gas

6:00 pm Del Mar (Race 5) – Gas Me Up 3/1 (2-star play)

Showed ability when not beaten far despite finishing last of five over five furlongs in a maiden special weight at Los Alamitos back in July. Showed improved form switched to turf when placing second, beaten one-and-a-half-lengths in a maiden special weight over the same trip at this venue early last month. Bred to appreciate the extra distance the son of Hard Spun gets here and with Mike Smith on board he looks up to recording a first career win.

8:30 pm Del Mar (Race 10) – Cave Rock 6/5 (2- star play)

An expensive $550,000 purchase as a yearling last September, Bob Baffert’s charge made an impressive start to his racing career when making all the running and drawing six lengths clear of his rivals to take out a six-and-one-half-furlong maiden special weight at this venue last month. While Baffert has two others in here the Arrogate colt rates the pick and is taken to maintain his unbeaten record following a couple of solid five furlong works here in recent weeks.

9:00 pm Del Mar (Race 11) – National Road 3/1 (2-star play)

Takes the eye here having broken his maiden when registering a five-and-a-half-length triumph in a $50,000 waiver maiden claiming race over a mile at Santa Anita in early June. Delivered a strong finish when racing from off the pace prior to finishing a neck second over this course and distance in a starter allowance subsequently and the four-year-old looks capable of scoring under Ryan Curatolo, who has been on board for each of the picks last three starts.
