Here are our best bets for today’s action at Del Mar race track.
6:00 pm ET Del Mar (Race 6) – Spun Intended 5/2 (2-star play)
There’s some impeccably bred two-year-old colts going to post for the $70,000 Maiden Special Weight at Del Mar, which is Race 6 on the card, and race experience can prove vital so it can pay to side with Spun Intended who was a very good second on debut at Santa Anita last month.
Mark Glatt’s colt was slow out of the gates and had to come wide turning in which wasn’t ideal, so he would have learned a lot there and with a better run through this time he should take all the beating.
6:30 pm ET Del Mar (Race 7) – Set Piece 5/1 (1-star play)
The Grade 2 Seabiscuit Handicap over an extended mile on the turf has been won by some lovely types over the years and this year will be no exception as a useful field of nine go to post in which the Brad Cox trained Set Piece can come out on top.
This is a classy horse. He’s a three-time stakes winner who thrives off a fast pace, which he should get here, and I really like his chances under Juan Hernandez who can deliver him with a winning run in deep stretch.
7:00 pm ET Del Mar (Race 8) – Hopkins 9/5 (2-star play)
Bob Baffert has another nice horse on his hands in the shape of Hopkins who, after two second placed efforts, broke his maiden at the third attempt with an easy wire-to-wire victory at Santa Anita last month and can follow up in this six furlong Allowance Optional Claiming event.
He’s lightly-raced for a four-year-old, but is clearly making up for last time and the manner in which he won last time was of a horse who is going places and I like his profile.
7:30 pm ET Del Mar (Race 9) – Percolate 8/1 (1-star play)
A field of eleven go to post for the finale at Del Mar which is an open looking Allowance Optional Claimer over a mile and a sixteenth on the turf and I like the chances of the colt in stall two, Percolate, who is improving nicely.
Recent efforts at Santa Anita and here at Del Mar read well coming into this and if he runs close to his second over a mile here last time out then he will have every chance of hitting the board.
