1:56 pm Churchill Downs (Race 7) – Nobals 20/1 (1-star play)

The Kentucky Derby undercard features no less than 8 stakes races, all of which are ultra competitive, My attention is turned to Nobals in the Turf Sprint Stakes, who can hit the board at a big price. Larry Rivelli’s gelding made all of the running to win an Allowance over course and distance last Summer so if he gets out of the gates quickly from the inside post then he could get away on the lead and surprise a few at double-figure odds.

4:31 pm Churchill Downs (Race 10) – Tejano Twist 6/1 (1-star play)

All eyes will be on Cody’s Wish here, and rightly so since he is a Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winne, But there’s some top class horses taking him on and I like Tejano Twist, who has won at this course and comes into this in a rich vein of form. He’s won 4 of his last 6 starts whilst recording some career-best speed figures and I feel this race will play to his strengths as there looks to be plenty of pace on and he likes to come from off the pace — so expect to see him finishing fast and late.

5:27 Churchill Downs (Race 11) – Santin 9/2 (1-star play)

A field of 10 older horses are set to go to post for the Grade 1 Old Forester Bourbon Turf Classic Stakes over a mile and an eighth on the turf and look no further than last year’s winner Santin, who had a nice prep run at Turfway Park back in March. Following a determined neck victory in this last year, Brendan Walsh’s charge then went on to win the prestigious Arlington Million and looks like he has been trained for this race again so watch out for him under Tyler Gaffalione, who was onboard for both of those victories last season.

6:57 pm Churchill Downs (Race 12: Kentucky Derby) – Forte 3/1 (2-star play)

Now it’s time for the 149th running of the Run For The Roses, which can turn into a real slog from the gates as the combination of a large field and kickback can make it tough for the runners. But one horse who will relish the conditions of this race is Forte. Todd Pletcher’s colt was crowned champion 2-year-old last year and has the grit and determination needed to win this race, so if you pair those traits with the superstar potential that he has then they all have him to beat.
