Horse Racing picks at Parx race track on Tuesday, December 21: Too Boss too good

John Velazquez (8) aboard Audible trained by Todd Pletcher

There is plenty of great horse racing action to look forward to across America on Tuesday, including at Parx race track. We have been in fine form with our picks, up 205.45 units dating back to Aug. 5. Let’s keep the momentum going!

Here are five runners whom we expected to have a leg up on the rest of the competition. It’s time to dive in and discuss these potentially profitable plays.

Best Bet: Too Boss 8/5 (3:46 pm Parx Race 9)

Next Best: Absolute Anna 8/5 (1:58 pm Parx Race 5)

Other: Nautical Gem 2/1 (12:10 pm Parx Race 1)

Boss to score down in grade

Trainer Todd Pletcher is a rare visitor to Parx and it’s notable that his Too Boss, out of action since the spring is slated to make his return at this venue having disappointed when seven lengths fourth in an allowance optional claimer over an extended mile on a sloppy main track back in February.

Following that effort the son of El Padrino was stepped up in grade to Grade 3 company, when a seven-and-a-half-length third in the Bay Shore Stakes over an extended seven furlongs saw him have beaten by a subsequent Grade 1 winner in Drain The Clock and the Grade 2-placed Whiskey Double.

Jockey Kendrick Karmouche ships in for the ride with the rider coming into this contest with a 22% strike-rate (18/87) at this meeting while he’s also partnered the selection in three of his four previous starts.

Too Boss has demonstrated good form in the mornings of late and coming into this contest on the back of a 1:02.01 five furlong breeze on the dirt training track at Belmont Park he looks capable of doubling his career tally having broken his maiden at Aqueduct in January.

Anna can double up

Absolute Anna has shown a liking for this venue since switching here from Monmouth Park in the autumn. The daughter of Raison d’Etat delivered a solid second place finish in a $7,500 claiming contest over an extended mile on a sloppy track when making her first start at this venue in early October.

Two slightly disappointing efforts in stronger contests followed prior to an emphatic six-and-a-quarter-length triumph over the same trip on a fast track earlier this month. The three-year-old raced from off the pace on that occasion and it’s of note that she is tackling the same grade in this contest.

The meetings leading jockey Ruben Silvera taking over in the saddle is a positive and given the likely hold up tactics being drawn widest of all in gate seven should prove no inconvenience for a filly who has delivered winning efforts from wider draws in the past.

Gem to complete hat trick

Nautical Gem has won each of her last two starts, including when delivering a four-and-a-quarter-length victory in a five-and-one-half-furlong starter optional claimer at Delaware Park on a wet-fast track at the end of August.

The four-year-old filly had previously taken a claimer over the same trip at Lone Star Park in early July on her final outing for Frank Lucarelli. The daughter of Gemologist has a good draw on the rail here and having delivered a 1:00.95 five furlong work on a good main track here last month she is taken to make a winning return to action with top jockey Ruben Silvera, who comes into this on top of the jockeys table with 209 winners from his 873 rides at this meeting and who was on board for the previously mentioned Delaware Park success booked to ride.

1:58 pm Parx (Race 5) – Cooper Penny 5/1

It’s still very early days for this daughter of Will Take Charge, who has raced on just six starts thus far. She’s won on a pair of occasions, with both successes coming at Parx. Most recently, she posted a career-best to win a $20,000 claimer over slightly shorter, proving much the best in the stretch. She remains totally unexposed and further improvement should be forthcoming, especially at this new trip. She’s yet to finish outside the top two at Parx and should maintain that record here.

2:25 pm Parx (Race 6) – The Big K 9/5

It took him six times to get off the mark, but since doing so, he’s maintained some strong figures against winners. He disappointed at Pimlico on his next start, but he quickly bounced back, finishing a clear second behind a runaway winner who was sent off at odds-on. Cathal Lynch’s gelding has plenty of early speed and Jaime Rodriguez’s charge should comfortably make the lead from stall six. From there, he’ll be tough to pass at this level.
