The start of Charlie Morton’s 18th season in the big leagues has not been ideal. The Orioles have lost all 3 of Morton’s starts and he has allowed at least 4 earned runs in all 3 games. That includes a 5-walk affair against the disciplined Arizona Diamondbacks in his last start, who rank top 5 in baseball in BB% vs RHP. Morton’s opponents tonight, the Cleveland Guardians, are not fair off that list. They walk at the sixth-highest rate in baseball versus RHP.
The Guardians will look to have at least 7 left-handed hitters in their lineup tonight — not great news for Morton and his walks. His 17% walk rate to LHH this year ranks in the bottom 5 in baseball amongst starters.

I expect a solid showing from the Guardians’ offense. So any way you can fade Morton is a good plan. I noted above about Morton’s struggles to command the ball, while the Guardians are one of the most disciplined teams in baseball. They’ll have 4 left-handed hitters atop the order that can get on base with the best of them. If Cleveland can register at least 3 runs on Morton, I feel good about getting 2 more runs across in a game where the Guardians are guaranteed to bat for all 9 innings.
