The curtain falls on the 2024 PGA Tour season this week with the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia, where Sunday’s champion will take home the $18 million FedEx Cup winning prize. The top 30 on the FedEx Cup standings head to Atlanta to tee it up in the PGA Tour’s season finale where once again a starting-strokes system is in operation. Scottie Scheffler, number one on the points list after a stellar year, will begin the tournament at ten under par with Xander Schauffele hot on his heels at eight under. Hideki Matsuyama and Keegan Bradley, the winners of the first two FedEx Cup playoff events, sit three and four shots back with the rest of the field conceding between five and ten shots to the leader.
A winner of seven titles this year including the Players Championship, the Masters and the Olympics, Scheffler is a red-hot favorite but he has twice failed to convert from pole position in this event, finishing runner-up to Rory McIlroy in 2022 and 6th behind Viktor Hovland last season. While it’s less than a month since he won Olympic gold, last week’s BMW Championship effort, in which he placed 33rd of 48 finishers, suggests that Scheffler is beatable, while he has not ranked inside the top 10 in 72-hole scoring in his last 3 East Lake visits.
Tour Championship golf picks and predictions
Xander Schauffele (+230)
Odds available at FanDuel Sportsbook and DraftKings Sportsbook at time of publishing.
Schauffele’s East Lake record is far more robust than Scheffler’s and the confident Californian looks the best bet in his bid to overhaul Scottie at the head of the standings. With 2 Majors safely tucked away, this has been the best season of Schauffele’s career and there is no better place for him to finish it off in style than East Lake, a course which he has always relished.
Schauffele won this tournament on his debut in 2017 before the current scoring system was introduced and he shot the lowest 72-hole score in both 2020 and last season. Based on 72-hole scores alone, his career form figures at East Lake read a magnificent 1-7-2-1-3-6-1. A runner-up at the St. Jude Championship and 5th last week, the 30-year-old will take some stopping with only Scheffler better off at the starting scores.

Sam Burns also catches the eye in both the outright betting and the lowest 72-hole score market. The Louisiana man begins his Tour Championship bid from 6 shots back but McIlroy won from that position in 2022 and Sungjae Im started on the same score and finished a shot behind the Northern Irishman. Burns finished 9th in the Tour Championship last season, carding the fourth-best 72-hole score, and he’s been in sparkling form over the last fortnight, finishing 5th at the St. Jude and runner-up at the BMW.
