Hideki Matsuyama produced a record-breaking 35-under-par total to win The Sentry in Hawaii last week and the Japanese star is the betting gavorite in his bid to achieve the second leg of the Hawaiian double at the Sony Open this week. First played in 1965, the Sony returns to its usual home at Waialae Country Club, the short, tree-lined Honolulu venue which contrasts drastically with last week’s Sentry test at wide-open Kapalua Resort. Despite their differences, the Hawaiian double is not unheard of — Ernie Els won both in 2003 and Justin Thomas did likewise in dominant fashion in 2017 — and Matsuyama, a Sony champion 3 years ago, has every chance of following up. However, the 32-year-old, who returned to 5th in the world with his 11th PGA Tour win, has always had to manage his fitness and there are others who make more appeal at bigger odds.

Let’s get into our best bets and predictions for the Sony Open, while you can also find out our golf picks for EVERY PGA Tour event this year.

The Sony Open golf picks and predictions

Maverick McNealy (+2800)

Odds available at FanDuel Sportsbook and DraftKings Sportsbook at time of publishing.

Our first Sony Open best bet is Maverick McNealy, who was advised last week and finished 8th on his debut in The Sentry, where he struck the ball well from tee to green, only really letting himself down with his normally reliable short game. McNealy is comfortable in Hawaii and he’s demonstrated an ability to handle Waialae on a number of occasions, including when 7th in the 2023 Sony Open.

Austin Eckroat (+4000)

Odds available at FanDuel Sportsbook at time of publishing.

With accuracy to the fore, this looks like another decent chance for Austin Eckroat to add to the titles he won at the Cognizant Classic and the World Wide Technology Championship last year. Eckroat was 12th on his Waialae debut in 2023 having shown little over the previous few months, then he opened with rounds of 65 and 66 last season before fading over the weekend. The Honolulu layout suits his eye and this time he arrives as a 2-time Tour champion. He was 15th last week, which has to be viewed as a positive given Kapalua is a less suitable venue.

Daniel Berger (+6500)

Odds available at Bet365 at time of publishing.

Daniel Berger and Nico Echavarria shared the runner-up spot behind McNealy at the RSM Classic in November and both have excellent potential to win this event at big odds. Berger is threatening a return to top form and his arrow-straight driving is ideal for Waialae, where he finished 7th on his most recent appearance in 2021. He is a 2-time winner at TPC Southwind, where Sony champions Thomas, Fabian Gomez and David Toms have all won titles.

Nicolas Echavarria (+10000)

Odds available at Bet365 at time of publishing.

Echavarria finished 32nd of 60 Kapalua players but this looks a better fit for the Zozo Championship hero, who ended last year with form figures of 1-6-29-2. He was 12th on Sony Open debut in 2023 and should again go well.

If you want the best odds on our Nicolas Echavarria pick, make sure you head over to Bet365. Right now, new users can click here to sign up for Bet365 and secure $150 in bonus bets INSTANTLY when they create an account and make a first bet of just $5!
