Scottie Scheffler remains without a PGA Tour victory this year and bettors must again weigh up whether to side with the world number 1 at low odds as he seeks to return to winning ways. Scheffler, one of just 2 members of the world’s top 35 in attendance this week at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, staged at TPC Craig Ranch in his adopted home state of Texas, is no bigger than +280 to claim the title.
TPC Craig Ranch, designed by Tom Weiskopf, is hosting the Byron Nelson for the 5th consecutive season and Scheffler will compete at the course for a 4th time having finished 47th, 15th and 5th from 2021 to 2023. Scheffler lives in Dallas and would dearly love to win this event – his PGA Tour debut came in the 2014 Byron Nelson at TPC Four Seasons when, aged just 17, he finished 22nd to offer a first glimpse of his potential. Craig Ranch, a wide layout that presents minimal danger for PGA Tour professionals, has lent itself to low scoring and while Scheffler is well equipped to post the sort of super-low total usually required to win this, he’s at his best on tougher tracks than he’ll encounter this week.
Another Texan, Jordan Spieth, was a Craig Ranch runner-up in 2022. His recent performances have been encouraging but this is an event that has thrown up a few shocks, so instead I’m looking to those with bigger odds to secure victory this week. Let’s dive into my golf predictions for this week’s PGA event, the CJ Cup Byron Nelson.

CJ Cup Byron Nelson golf picks and predictions
CJ Cup Byron Nelson best bet: Ryan Gerard (+6500)
Odds available at FanDuel Sportsbook at time of publishing.
Ryan Gerard has impressed in the Lone Star State, finishing 9th at the Houston Open and a runner-up in the Texas Open. He was a respectable 27th in strong company at the Heritage and then 12th at the Zurich Classic last week alongside Danny Walker. Gerard, an excellent putter and sharp iron-player, and is in much better form now than he was when missing the cut on Byron Nelson debut in 2023.

CJ Cup Byron Nelson prediction: Matt McCarty (+9000)
Odds available at FanDuel Sportsbook at time of publishing.
This tournament could offer a chance for Matt McCarty to build on his superb 14th-placed finish on his Masters debut. McCarty won 3 times on the Korn Ferry Tour last season and then won the PGA Tour’s Black Desert Championship in the autumn. He makes his Craig Ranch debut this week but it is a venue that should play to his strengths.
CJ Cup Byron Nelson prediction: Alejandro Tosti (+9000)
Odds available at FanDuel Sportsbook and bet365 at time of publishing.
Hot-headed Argentinian Alejandro Tosti does not putt nearly as well as Gerard and McCarty but it’s hard to argue with his recent results – a 5th-place finish in Houston, 12th spot in the Texas Open and a runner-up finish in the Corales Puntacana Championship. Tosti, an aggressive slugger and solid iron player, missed the Byron Nelson cut last year due to a dismal performance on the greens. His putter is a negative but he’s in fine form for his 2nd crack at Craig Ranch.
CJ Cup Byron Nelson longshot pick: Cam Davis (+11000)
Odds available at bet365 at time of publishing.
Like Tosti, Cam Davis is an unpredictable but talented performer who is showing signs of a return to form, finishing 13th at the Heritage and 32nd at the Zurich Classic where he produced a blitz of birdies in Thursday’s opening round. The Australian has twice won the Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club, where last year’s Byron Nelson champion Taylor Pendrith finished 2nd in 2022. Craig Ranch shares some similarities with that venue.
CJ Cup Byron Nelson longshot pick: Davis Riley (+15000)
Odds available at FanDuel Sportsbook at time of publishing.
Davis Riley has found form again, finishing 6th in Puerto Rico and 7th at the Valspar before a 21st-place finish at the Masters. He was 9th at Craig Ranch in 2022 and 30th last year.
CJ Cup Byron Nelson longshot pick: Chris Gotterup (+17500)
Odds available at bet365 at time of publishing.
I’m completing our CJ Cup Byron Nelson picks with long-driving Chris Gotterup, who caught the eye when 24th on his course debut last year. Gotterup is based in nearby Edmond, Oklahoma. He was 18th at the Houston Open and has shown form at this time of year, winning the Myrtle Beach Classic at the beginning of last May.
