On the men’s side, three players appear to be in a league of their own right now: Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz. Meanwhile, the current state of the WTA Tour is a one-woman show. Iga Swiatek, who won the 2020 French Open, is riding a 28-match winning streak. The season’s second major starts at Roland Garros on Sunday and Swiatek is going head-to-head against the field per the odds (she is a -110 favorite).

Here are the odds to win the women’s singles French Open title and my best bets. Also be sure to check out my men’s preview and picks.

3-star value play: Ons Jabeur (+1200)

I’m not taking any favorite at minus money – especially not when it’s a player who has won just a single Grand Slam title in her career. That’s not to discredit what Swiatek is doing. She is dominating the tour and obviously without taking odds into account I would pick her to win the tournament. I’m just not touching -110. I will, however, most definitely target competitors on the opposite side of the draw from Swiatek. The longer you avoid playing her, the better. That means it is a favorable path through the bracket for Jabeur, who has been the second-best player on clay this season. The 6th-ranked Tunisian finished runner-up in Charleston, reached the Stuttgart quarterfinals, won Madrid and finished runner-up to Swiatek in Rome. Don’t be surprised if the next step in Jabeur’s ascension is a maiden Grand Slam title.

2-star value play: Coco Gauff (+2000)

Coco Gauff getting bad draws in the early rounds of Grand Slams has been a common occurrence. That certainly isn’t the case this time around. Her quarter of the bracket includes a trio of major champions, but they are all either past their prime or not playing great at the moment (Garbine Muguruza, Victoria Azarenka and Barbora Krejcikova). No. 5 seed Anett Kontaveit was red hot at the end of 2021 but now finds herself in a slump. Gauff has a golden opportunity to reach the semis in Paris, and at that point anything can happen. The future could be now for American tennis.

1-star value play: Amanda Anisimova (+3500)

Amanda Anisimova and Jabeur are in the same quarter of the bracket, which obviously isn’t ideal in terms of somewhat conflicting bets. But they wouldn’t face each other until the quarters and the best news for each one is that they are away from Swiatek. It’s true that Anisimova has a terrible first-round draw against Naomi Osaka, but that is why you can grab the American at +3500. If she gets past Osaka (which I fully expect her to do), the odds will plummet. So far on clay Anisimov has reached the semifinals in Charleston (lost to Jabeur in three sets) and the quarters in both Madrid and Rome. She made a run to the Roland Garros semis in 2019 as a 17-year-old. She could go all the way at 20.
