Expert College Baseball World Series best bets, picks and predictions today, 6/24: LSU and Florida rely on pitching

Florida Gators designated hitter Luke Heyman (28) celebrates after hitting a walk off sacrifice fly against the Virginia Cavaliers in the ninth inning at Charles Schwab Field Omaha

The college baseball season is nearly over, but first, we have the College Baseball World Series championship series between LSU and Florida. LSU advanced to the championship with an extra-innings win over Wake Forest on Thursday while Florida has been waiting for the winner since Wednesday. It’s going to be a great first game, and a great series, so let’s dive into my College Baseball World Series best bet for today’s action.

LSU vs Florida Under 10.5 (-130)

Eight teams started in Omaha, and only two remain. It has been a spectacular College World Series with nearly every game being decided by just a run or two, which has kept the excitement and the passion at an all-time high. With that said, we’re guaranteed only two more games in Omaha, but we can get a third game in the Championship series if required. In Game 1 of the Championship, LSU will roll out Ty Floyd and Florida will counter with Brandon Sproat. Right off the bat, the Gators have a huge advantage. Florida has had to play only the minimum of 3 games in Omaha which shows the benefits of not losing before the championship series. Saturday night will be just the second time this week that the Gators will take the field while LSU will be playing in their 5th game in 6 days. And unfortunately for the Tigers, Paul Skenes is out for the remainder of the tournament after throwing 120 pitches on Thursday night.

Floyd has been the Robin to Skenes’ Batman this season. In 16 starts, Floyd is 7-0 with a 4.45 ERA and has limited opponents to just a .210 batting average. He has made one start in Omaha, which came against Wake Forest, and threw 5 innings and gave up 2 runs and 2 hits while tying a season-high 10 strikeouts. That game against the Demon Deacons finished with just 5 total runs. Sproat is 8-3 with a 4.66 ERA in 18 outings as the ace for Florida. His only start in Omaha came against Virginia, and the right-hander threw 5.1 innings and gave up 3 runs and 7 hits along with 7 strikeouts. That game ended with 11 runs, but 10 of them came in the final 3 innings as both bullpens imploded. That shouldn’t happen on Saturday night because every run counts and managers will be careful with their bullpen. Be sure to shop around for this bet because while FanDuel has the total listed at 10.5 with the under at -130 odds, DraftKings has the total much lower at 9 with the under having -105 odds. That’s a big difference! Regardless though, I expect scoring to be scarce in the first game of the Championship and would play this down to 9.0, but 9.5 or above is ideal.
