Boston Celtics -3.5 over Minnesota Timberwolves (-112)

After a rough stretch in the 2nd half of December, the Celtics ended 2024 on a high note by demolishing the lowly Toronto Raptors 125-71. Everyone apart from Al Horford scored at least one basket in the win, which means the starters had plenty of time to rest as neither logged more than 29 minutes. That’s a good sign going into a game against a team they managed to beat by just 2 points in the first meeting of the season back in late November.

Minnesota has shown flashes of the team we all fell in love with last year, but consistency has eluded them for the most part this year. They’re 3-1 in their last 4, but the average margin of victory in those 3 wins was just 3 points. In order to stand a chance against the Celtics your three-ball has to be elite, Boston has hit 20+ threes in 3 of their last 4 games. At 11-3, they are arguably the best road team in the NBA and with 14 wins in 16 games head-to-head there’s no reason for me to doubt the C’s here. Back Boston to cover.

Jayson Tatum to record 10+ rebounds (-105)

Although Tatum’s had back-to-back games with less than 10 boards, I wouldn’t put too much weight into that. Against the Raptors he logged just 29 minutes and finished with 8, while against Indiana he fell short by just 1 rebound. Prior to this run, he had 9 games in a row with double-digit rebounds, so this is a good spot for Tatum to revert back to normal. He has upped his rebounding in 3 months straight, starting from 7 per game in October all the way up to 11.3 per game in December. Kristaps Porzingis is once again questionable to play here, and if he doesn’t suit up then Tatum’s responsibilities on the glass grow even bigger. Although they have Rudy Gobert down low, the Timberwolves rank just 21st in rebounds per game this season averaging 51 per game. Count on Tatum to get to his averages here.

Anthony Edwards 3+ made threes (-180)

Without a strong performance from Ant Man, the Timberwolves won’t be able to make a game out of this one. Edwards had a strong showing at TD Garden earlier in the year against Boston, connecting on 54.5% of his threes while also scoring 28 points. He’s at a respectable 40.7% efficiency from downtown in home games this season and we just saw him connect on 4 threes in 3 of his last 4 outings. Boston is one of the better perimeter-defending teams in the league, but on the road they allow 36.1% of made threes which ranks only 13th in the NBA. The C’s are also only 18th in three-pointers allowed per game on the road, with opponents knocking down 12.6 a night. Edwards should have his hands full dealing with Jaylen Brown, Jrue Holiday and Payton Pritchard here, but he’s shown on numerous occasions that he’s ready to perform on the biggest stage. It doesn’t get any bigger than facing the defending champions, so let’s see what Edwards can do here.
