Canadiens ML (+100)
The series moves to Montreal for Game 3 between the Canadiens and the Washington Capitals. The Capitals took care of business on home ice and led the series 2-0, but this is far from over. The Canadiens have put up a fight, but they just haven’t gotten the bounces. Now the goal is to win both games on home ice, and it starts tonight.
The Capitals have been good for 40 minutes, then seem to fall asleep in the 3rd period. If it wasn’t for the stellar play of Logan Thompson in Game 2, this series could be tied. Montreal is hoping to get more from certain players on the team, most notably Patrik Laine, who didn’t play a single second in the 3rd period. For them to have any kind of success, they will need him to elevate his game. Montreal has been a better team on home ice, but they need to come out and play for 60 minutes. They can’t wait until the 3rd period to turn the pressure up. Look for them to come out with more urgency right from the start, which, if they can maintain for most of the game, could lead them to a massive Game 3 win.
Over 5.5 (-124)
The first 2 games of this series have stayed under the total with scores of 3-2 (OT) and 3-1, but Friday’s Game 3 could be of the higher-scoring variety. Washington was second in the NHL with 3.49 goals per game during the regular season, and they’ve managed to score 3 goals in each of the first 2 games of this series. They’ve also fired 32 shots on goal in each game, putting pressure on Montreal goaltender Sam Montembeault. He has been solid so far with a .921 save percentage, but he has struggled with consistency throughout the season, as his save percentage during the regular season was .902. Look for Washington to really force the issue again in this one.
Offensively, Montreal hasn’t been able to find steady results in this series, but the chances have been there. Thompson was unreal in Game 2, as he willed Washington to victory by making 25 saves on 26 shots. If a bounce or two goes Montreal’s way in Game 3, it could result in a higher-scoring game. In addition, if they are going to pickup a huge Game 3 win, the Canadiens need to put the pressure on from the start. Look for Montreal to come out firing.
Juraj Slafkovsky anytime goal scorer (+280)
Juraj Slafkovsky hasn’t scored in the postseason yet, but tonight could be the night be finds the back of the net. Slafkovsky leads the Canadiens in shots on goal so far in this series, as he fired 4 shots on goal in Game 1, and 5 in Game 2. Slafkovsky posted a shooting percentage of 13.5 in the regular season, so if he continues to fire shots on net, it’s only a matter of time until one gets through. He is seeing plenty of power play time, and his ice time of 22:33 in Game 2 was second among Montreal forwards behind Nick Suzuki. The coaching staff trusts him to make plays, and he could be in store for a big night.
