Saturday in the NHL brings a loaded 11-game slate full of matchups with playoff implications. One such matchup is a battle between a couple of original 6 teams as the Bruins travel to Detroit to play the Red Wings. The game will be featured on ESPN+ and ABC for an 8PM ET puck drop. While the Bruins have all but mailed it in for the season, the Red Wings are mathematically alive for a playoff spot with a rapidly shortening runway. Detroit would love 2 points here and Boston would love to play spoiler. Both games this season between these teams have been 1-goal games. The matchup, implications, and history make for great viewing in this one.

If you want to watch with some added intrigue, here is a same-game parlay we like along with some rationale. Let’s dive in, and don’t forget you can also get our expert NHL picks for the games on Saturday.

Red Wings -1.5 (+150)

Both the Bruins and Red Wings have been limping through the home stretch of the regular season. But fortunately for Detroit, they still find themselves mathematically alive for a playoff spot. They are in an advantageous spot, despite their sluggish recent form, as they catch the Bruins in a 7-game losing streak. Boston has also lost their last 5 consecutive road games. The home-road splits certainly favor the Red Wings in this one as they are 18-16-3 at home this season to the Bruins’ 11-22-3 road record. Detroit has won 2 out of their last 3 at home by a combined score of 13-7.

During the Bruins’ current 7-game losing streak, all but one loss has been by multiple goals. Over that span, Boston has a -23 goal differential for an average loss by 3.29 goals. The Bruins aren’t just losing lately. They are getting bullied and losing big. Boston is a vulnerable club right now that even to the eye test, it looks like they just purely don’t have any fight and are ready for the season to be over. The Red Wings are desperate for 2 points and will come out with added urgency looking to pounce.

Over 5.5 (-130)

The over has been trending for both the Bruins and Red Wings of late. The total has gone over in 5 out of the Bruins’ last 7 games, as well as in 7 out of the Red Wings’ last 10 games played at home. Head-to-head, the over has hit in 5 out of the last 6 played in Detroit. The recent high total results for these teams only reinforce season-long trends on both sides. The combined over under record for Boston and Detroit this season is 70-67-8. That isn’t very lopsided, but the home road splits are. Of that combined record, Bruins road games combined with Red Wings home games have an over under record of 40-29-4.

For both teams, it has been lackluster goal prevention that has led to so many game total overs. The Bruins have allowed 36 goals in the 7-game losing streak for an average of 5.14 goals allowed per game. If they hold remotely close to that average of goals allowed, it will not take much for the Bruins to get this one over the total with a goal or 2. Meanwhile, the Red Wings h, tave either scored or allowed 4+ goals in 5 consecutive games and in 8 out of their last 10. These teams have talent, but are playing sloppy and allowing goals in bunches. The pure matchup, trends, and recent form bode well for another over.

Lucas Raymond anytime goalscorer (+185)

On a team with plenty of talent, Lucas Raymond is the only player averaging a point per game this year. Raymond has 25 goals and 72 points in 72 games played this season. This has been the most productive season of his career as he continues to get better and be rewarded for it. Raymond is on the Red Wings’ top line and top power play. At any point, he is on the ice with some combination of Dylan Larkin, Vladimir Tarasenko, Patrick Kane, Moritz Seider, and other talented players. Playing a team leaking oil like the Bruins, there should be ample opportunity for Raymond to get on the scoreboard.

Scoring against the Bruins is something Lucas Raymond has done very well. In fact, he is the only Red Wing to have done so this season. In 2 head to head games this year, Detroit has scored 3 goals against Boston. Raymond scored all 3 goals. Those games and that production also came at a time this season when the Bruins were a better, more complete team before their trade deadline fire-sale. This is a good player coming off a game with a goal and an assist, who plays with other star players, leads his team in points, and gets a favorable spot against a struggling team against which he has 3 goals in 2 games this year. Raymond is worth the play in this one.
