We’re on to round 2 of the British Open, so the cut at Royal Liverpool will be made by the end of play on Friday. It is a rather bizarre leaderboard, with amateur Christo Lamprecht of Georgia Tech among the leaders at 5-under (Tommy Fleetwood is also at the top). Wyndham Clark, Max Homa, Jordan Spieth, Scottie Scheffler, Brooks Koepka and Xander Schauffele are all in good shape. Justin Thomas (11-over) is not! I went 2-1 with my two-ball bets on Thursday, and now it’s time to dive into my best plays for Friday.

Jon Rahm to beat Tyrrell Hatton (-125)
Hatton is in solid form overall and beat Rahm by 3 strokes in the opening round, but I will happily back a much more proven player at majors at a relatively modest price. Rahm is a 2-time major champion (including at this year’s Masters) and he placed T3 at the British Open in 2021. The Spaniard really wasn’t that bad on Thursday despite shooting 3-over 74; he had 4 bogeys and 1 birdie. Rahm can be a birdie machine, so if he can just make a few more putts while continuing to minimize mistakes then a low round is possible. Hatton made 3 bogeys on the back 9, shooting +2 following an opening -2, so he doesn’t have a ton of momentum despite his respectable score of 70.
Hideki Matsuyama to beat Jason Day (-125)
Matsuyama carded a 1-under to Day’s 1-over, and it’s no surprise that the former Masters champion is playing the better golf of the 2 so far. He can pretty much take his driver out of the bag in Hoylake, and waywardness with that club has been his lone weakness of late. By keeping it straight and avoiding big numbers, Matsuyama should be able to continue his success from the opening round. At the very least it looks like another made cut for the Japanese veteran, who has made 9 of his last 10. In 6 of his last 10 starts he has placed in the top 18. Matsuyama is in superior form to Day, who has missed 3 of 4 cuts since winning the AT&T Byron Nelson.

J.T. Poston to beat Louis Oosthuizen (-110)
This is without question the best bet of the day. Poston was a trendy sleeper pick coming into the week, and why not? He had posted consecutive T6 finishes at the John Deere Classic and Genesis Scottish Open. It’s no surprise that the 30-year-old American played well in round 1, carding an even-par 71. It’s also no shock that Oosthuizen struggled to the tune of a 3-over 74. Oosty is a former British Open champion, but his LIV Tour results have been all over the place and physical problems have plagued him in recent seasons. The South African simply cannot be trusted at this point. It’s also worth noting that Oosthuizen shot a horrendous 40 on the back 9 on Thursday, so he has to be going to bed feeling terrible. I fully expect him to miss the cut, while at the same time I anticipate Poston moving into serious contention going into the weekend.
