Best player props for Friday's NHL slate: Ovi lights the lamp

Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin (8) celebrates with teammates after scoring a goal against the Philadelphia Flyers in the second period at Capital One Arena.

After a jam-packed slate of 11 NHL games on Thursday, we have a smaller slate of just 2 games on Friday night. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t find value in the prop market. In this article I am breaking down my 2 favorite props of the day. Along with these plays, don’t forget to check out our full game previews for each NHL matchup.

Now let’s get to it.

Alex Ovechkin over 0.5 goals (+106)

Alex Ovechkin is showing no signs of slowing down this season. At 36 years of age, The Great 8 has already collected 24 goals in 34 games. Doing a ton of damage on the power-play, Ovechkin made history last week against the Red Wings. With 2:51 left in the 3rd period, Ovechkin broke the NHL record for power-play goals by scoring his 275th career goal on the man-advantage. Tonight, Ovechkin and the Capitals go up against the St. Louis Blues.

St. Louis has been a strong defensive team at times this season, but the Blues have allowed 11 goals in 3 games since returning from the league’s brief hiatus. In addition, Jordan Binnington is having a tough time in net. Binnington has allowed 4 or more goals in 3 of his last 4 starts, including giving up 9 total goals in his last 2. Ovechkin has seen plenty of success in his 20 career games against the Blues, scoring 18 goals. Look for Ovechkin to pot a goal tonight.

Jordan Kyrou over 0.5 points (-128)

Staying in the same game, the second prop of the day is Jordan Kyrou to register a point. Kyrou is the only member of the Blues averaging more than a point per game this season. The 23-year-old center has 33 points (13 goals, 20 assists) in 30 games. He has been on a tear lately, registering 8 points (4 goals, 4 assists) in his last 3 games. With the way that he is rolling, I like Kyrou’s chances of getting on the scoresheet again tonight.

Kyrou has not been fazed by playing the road this season. He has 19 points (6 goals, 13 assists) in 15 games on the road. Washington goaltender Ilya Samsonov is having a strong year, but he has been a bit shaky of late. Samsonov has allowed 3 goals or more in 2 of his last 3 outings, and he is coming off a game in which he allowed 4 goals to the Devils. St. Louis has a well-rounded offensive attack, and could be poised for a big night. Kyrou figures to be in on the action.
