I've been a capper since my love for sports met my proficiency with numbers and math. The NFL and NCAAF have always been my first loves, followed by the NHL. Although I prefer sports that involve hitting people, I still love capping MLB, soccer, tennis, and even some esports. Living in Florida has its perks like year-round sports of any kind. With the weekend action having wrapped up, we’re back to our normally scheduled 2023 Stanley Cup playoff matchups. All 4 series on Monday stand at 2-1, so it’s safe to say it’s been exciting thus far. I have been able to add to it by coming up with my top NHL player props. Monday night is no different, and I’m focused on the 2 Eastern Conference matchups. Those are the first 2 games of the night, so let’s not waste any time getting into it.

Along with these player props, be sure to check out all of our NHL picks for the action.

Adam Fox, NYR, Over 0.5 assists (-125)

The New York Rangers were able to win each of the first 2 games over the series against the Devils in New Jersey. That means they had an incredible opportunity heading back to the Big Apple. However, they ended up falling 2-1 in overtime on Saturday. Losing back-to-back games at home will effectively nullify what they were able to pull off in Game 1 and Game 2, so I expect a stronger performance. Thankfully, we don’t need to sweat out them winning the game. Instead, we’re just concerned with Adam Fox’s performance.

Fox has come through for us several times this season, and I’m trusting him again in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Fox ended the year as a top candidate for the Norris Trophy, recognizing the NHL’s best defenseman — and deservedly so. It’s certainly worth focusing on his assist prop, as 62 of his 72 points this season were helpers. He has elite goal-scorers like Patrick Kane, Chris Kreider and Mika Zibanejad alongside him, so it certainly makes sense. It’s also worth noting that I’m not letting Game 3’s lackluster performance deter me. Fox had a ridiculous 4-assist performance in Game 1 and 2 more in Game 2. With that type of dominance, I trust him to get at least 1 more in Game 4.

John Tavares, TOR, Over 0.5 assists (+170)

The other Eastern Conference clash is a rematch of last year’s first round. The Tampa Bay Lightning knocked out the Toronto Maple Leafs in 7 games, and the way this series is going we may see another 7 games. Admittedly, I would like to target Tampa Bay’s Brayden Point to come back firing after getting injured in Game 3. However, I have another target for a bit of a safer approach rather than needing to worry about Point’s health.

When it comes to the Leafs, guys like Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner get most of the attention. However, it’s John Tavares that is the captain of this team. Backing any skater to perform against Lightning goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy always comes with some hesitation, but he hasn’t been his best thus far. Tavares had an assist in Game 1 and dominated Game 2 with a hat trick. While that means there’s always the risk that he finds the back of the net, himself, he still has elite goal-scorers alongside him in Matthews and William Nylander. Of his 80 points, 44 were assists — so he’s still no stranger to sending out helpers. The Lightning very well may bounce back and win Game 4, but that doesn’t mean Tavares can’t contribute.
