I've been a capper since my love for sports met my proficiency with numbers and math. The NFL and NCAAF have always been my first loves, followed by the NHL. Although I prefer sports that involve hitting people, I still love capping MLB, soccer, tennis, and even some esports. Living in Florida has its perks like year-round sports of any kind. The 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs have not disappointed, and that has continued into the second round. That holds true for individual performances as well. After missing multiple games with a concussion, 38-year-old Joe Pavelski scored 4 goals for the Dallas Stars. Just one night later, Leon Draisaitl of the Edmonton Oilers did the same. Despite those epic performances, they both lost their matchups. We’re focused on another team that lost their Game 1 for tonight’s NHL player prop — the New Jersey Devils who are featured in the only game of the night against the Carolina Hurricanes. While predicting a winner looks tough, we’re focused only on a specific skater to perform.

Nico Hischier over 0.5 points (-155)

When it comes to the Devils, most fans’ immediate thoughts go to Jack Hughes, and rightfully so. The 21-year-old looks set to be a future Hart Trophy winner, but he can’t do it without help around him. Before we dive into our play on Hischier, consider taking Jesper Bratt for the same point prop as well. Hischier has been Hughes’ right-hand man throughout the season. That’s demonstrated by his 80 points, which was behind only Hughes on the team. He’s a great balance of scoring talent and assist-man.

While he’s not listed on the same line as Hughes, as a center, he still often has the winger Hughes by his side. When he’s not on the ice with the youngster, he has the ability to score himself. However, he has preferred to send out helpers in these playoffs. Prior to Game 1 against the Hurricanes, Hischier recorded an assist in 5 straight games against the New York Rangers. The fact that we’re getting a very reasonable price for his overall point prop is quite rare. It may not be a huge plus-money play, but for a skater who’s recorded multiple points 20 times this season, we’ll take this value in Game 2.
