The Cleveland Guardians have found themselves atop the AL Central division by 3.5 games with only 16 games left to play in the regular season. Their 27-year-old right-handed starter Cal Quantrill has been a key contributor to the Guardians’ success, posting a 12-5 record while Cleveland is 18-10 in his starts overall. The former 8th overall draft pick has cleared this 16.5 outs line in 19 of his last 26 starts made and 13 of his last 15 at home. Quantrill sees his OBA drop from .287 on the road to .231 at home and he rarely walks people, sitting in the 69th percentile in that category on the season.

The righty gets ahead in counts often with his 63.2% first-pitch strike rate and has issued only 24 free passes in his 96 innings pitched at home. He has also pitched very well during the day, where his ERA drops to 2.89 in 65.1 IP.

Cleveland and Minnesota played this weekend for 4 games and will finish off their season series this afternoon. The result is an extremely worked bullpen for the Guardians as they have 4 arms that would either be pitching for the 3rd consecutive day or for the 3rd time in 4 days with an appearance today. Getting Quantrill to pitch into and through the 6th inning today would be crucial for the Guardians in this matchup, as that is not something Sonny Gray has been able to consistently do this season for Minnesota.

Not only does Cleveland need innings tonight from their starter, but this matchup is one that intrigues me. Quantrill just had a 5-inning game against the Twins 2 starts ago but that was on the road. His only other start against Minnesota this season resulted in 8 innings of work in a Cleveland win. In the last 30 days against right-handed pitching, the Twins rank 24th in wOBA, 25th in OPS, 29th in ISO and have a wRC+ of 86. They have typically been a power-oriented team this season but during the last month against right-handers, they rank 29th in HR/FB%. Of the last 9 right-handed starters to face Minnesota, 7 of them have cleared this line including a 1-run outing from Cody Morris yesterday.
