The young 2024 Major League Baseball season continues with a small 6-game slate on Thursday. A majority of teams are in between series, but there is enough baseball on the schedule to dive into some enticing MLB player props. Today’s picks focus on Giants vs Red Sox and Guardians vs Astros. You can find out our MLB picks for all of Thursday’s games, but for now, let’s dive into my best MLB player prop bets.
Matt Chapman, SF, Over 1.5 total bases (-110)
Odds available at BetMGM at time of publishing. Playable at that number.
Chapman has a favorable matchup on his hands this afternoon when the San Francisco Giants visit the Boston Red Sox. He is 4-for-6 during his career against Boston starter Josh Winckowski and has hit for the lifetime cycle with those 4 hits. That’s right, in just 6 at-bats against Winckowski, he has delivered a single, a double, a triple and a home run.
That alone is enough to inspire confidence in Chapman, but it’s also worth noting that he has been in fine form recently regardless of who is on the mound. San Francisco’s third baseman has hit safely in 3 straight games and in 10 of the last 11. Meanwhile, Winckowski has surrendered 6 runs on 10 hits in his last 8.1 innings of work. Chapman may only get 2 at-bats against the right-hander, but it should be enough to send him well on his way to multiple total bases.

Jeremy Pena, HOU, Over 1.5 hits + runs + total bases (-160)
Odds available at DraftKings Sportsbook at time of publishing. Playable at that number.
Pena has been hot pretty much all season long and is showing no signs of slowing down. His power numbers aren’t huge (3 home runs, 11 RBIs), but he is batting .325. The Houston Astros’ shortstop is on a 4-game hitting streak and has knocked out 7 hits in total over the past 6 contests. Even more impressive is that Pena has scored 5 runs in the last 4 games. In those 4 games, the Astros have crossed the plate 32 times. Finally, this offense is rolling.
All of that should set up Pena nicely for a big day at the office against the Cleveland Guardians. Cleveland is sending Logan Allen to the mound, against whom Pena is a perfect 3-for-3 lifetime. Allen is saddled with a dreadful 5.46 ERA and 1.40 WHIP so far in 2024, so everything points to success for both Pena individually and Houston as a whole.
