Nathan Eovaldi got the win in the Rangers’ 2nd game of the season against the Philadelphia Phillies, but I bet he wishes he was better. He pitched 5 innings and allowed 3 earned runs while walking 2 batters. His command is what made him a solid starter last season. He walked 2 or more batters in only 6 of 20 games last season and 2 batters in all of spring training in 15.1 innings. Eovaldi is well regarded as one of the best in MLB at attacking the zone.
The Chicago Cubs aren’t an offense that Eovaldi has to worry about too much. They see the 4th-fewest pitches per at-bat and have walked the 9th-fewest times to start the season. Eovaldi was money on the road last season when it came to his command, staying under this line in 8 of 10 games. Expect a solid performance from the Rangers pitcher in what will likely be a low-scoring game with winds blowing in.

Lucas Giolito (CWS) over 17.5 outs (-121)

Unlike Eovaldi, Giolito has question marks about his command. He has a knack for striking guys out but does find himself in trouble with baserunners. Luckily for us, this Pittsburgh Pirates offense is underwhelming. They’re hitting below .200 against right-handed pitching this season and are bottom 7 in on-base percentage.
Giolito’s 97 pitches in his 1st start are a strong indication that Chicago will ride him deep into this game. The White Sox were blitzed for 16 runs yesterday against the San Francisco Giants with starting pitcher Lance Lynn not making it out of the 5th inning.
Giolito is without question a great talent in MLB with his stuff. This is a perfect opportunity to put it all together and lead him into a great season.
