Pickswise was nice enough to give me the opportunity to write up my plays for you all. For those of you who don’t know me, they refer to me as JutPicks on Twitter. I post all my plays with brief writeups every day. Now I get to write even more with no character limit!
I pride myself on being as transparent as they come. My MLB record from last season and this season is listed in my bio. On the year, I’ve recorded 204 wins and 148 losses for a gain of +35.51 units. Without further ado, let’s dive into my favorite play for Sunday.
Nestor Cortes (Yankees) over 16.5 outs (-115)
Line available at DraftKings Sportsbook at time of publishing.
The New York Yankees have taken the first 3 games of this 4-game set against their rival the Boston Red Sox. Lefty Nestor Cortes will try to lead the Yankees to a sweep at home against 23-year-old Brayan Bello on Sunday night.
Cortes is making his fourth start after a short IL stint. He threw the most pitches since he returned to action in his last start with 87 against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He found himself in some jams throughout the game, allowing 5 hits and 2 walks through 5 innings, but allowed only 1 run. The task will be tougher tonight against the Boston Red Sox. They’re hitting at a top-5 average against left-handed pitching this month and will do all they can to play spoiler against the Yankees.
Through the first 3 games of the series, Gerrit Cole and Jameson Taillon were able to give the Yankees 6 innings of work each. They threw a combined 204 pitches in the first 2 games of the series. On Thursday and Saturday, the Yankees used 9 bullpen arms and they could desperately use a quality start from their left-hander today.
Cortes has gone over this line in 6 of 13 games at home and I expect the Yankees to gradually increase his pitch count to get him ready for the postseason.
