It hasn’t been the year Dylan Cease envisioned after a 2nd-place finish in the AL CY Young race last season. His 10.4 BB% kills any chance for him to go deep into games and he’s getting hit much harder this season compared to years past. The good news is his K rate ranks in the 74th percentile this season and he has a great matchup against the Colorado Rockies today.
Coors Field will scare most bettors away from backing any pitcher involved in the game, but Cease has showcased his strikeout potential by cashing this prop in 8 of his last 15 games. Cease’s out line is interesting today with the White Sox bullpen taxed to the max. They failed to get at least 5 innings from both of their starters in the first 2 games and have a series with the Seattle Mariners lined up for tomorrow. They simply need Cease to deal today and give them productive innings and a chance to win the game.
The Rockies K% against RHP in August is lofty. Their 28.3% K rate ranks 2nd-worst in baseball but drops to 23% at home — 10th-worst during that span. The walks are inevitable for Cease, but as long as he can punch out Rockies hitters when getting into deep counts, I like our chances of cashing this.
