The new-look Miami Marlins are in a dog fight for the final NL wild-card spot. They are currently tied with the surging Chicago Cubs and faltering Cincinnati Reds. Luckily for the Reds and Cubs, the Marlins will probably be humbled in L.A. They will take on the Dodgers for a 3-games series and L.A. is riding an 11-game winning streak and eyeing the Atlanta Braves for the top spot in the NL. RHP Tony Gonsolin has caught my eye as my top MLB player prop bet.
Gonsolin clearly hasn’t had the same production as last season, when he won 16 games — but the matchup here points to a quality outing tonight. The Marlins have struggled against RHPs on the road in August with a bottom-10 batting average while striking out at a top-5 rate. Josh Bell and Jake Burger have been great acquisitions for Miami but they are only 2 guys in the middle of the order. The rest of the team has to produce and that hasn’t been the case. Jorge Soler, Luiz Arraez, Bryan De La Cruz and even Josh Bell are all hitting below .250 against RHPs this month and are a big reason why the Marlins have dropped 9 of 15 games this month.
Even with the Dodgers being the few teams who didn’t have an off day yesterday, Gonsolin most likely will not be pushed to the limits tonight. In his last 10 games he has only pitched more than 91 pitches in 4 of them. He has stayed under this number in 9 of 16 games.
