Sonny Gray has been sensational to start the season for the Minnesota Twins. He joins Pablo Lopez and Joe Ryan in one of the most talented starting rotations in the American League. The Twins are known to not push their starters. Gray has inconsistently thrown 5 to 7 innings in his starts thus far. He’s coming off a start in which he threw 107 pitches in a masterclass performance against the New York Yankees, but he threw only 78 pitches 3 starts ago and was pitching a shutout. With that being said, we don’t know if Gray will be pushed to the brink today, but he has a great matchup.
Gray will face off against a Kansas City Royals team that is hitting a league-low .211 vs right-handed pitching. They’ve failed to register 6 hits on a right-handed starter in 11 of 21 starts, including only 3 against Gray in the second game of the season. He has solid splits against the Royals’ best hitters in Salvador Perez and Vinnie Pasquantino. The Royals’ 26% K rate should eat up Gray’s pitch count and limit the damage in terms of hits allowed.
