We are wasting no time throwing ourselves into the fire that is football season. The very first game of the 2022 NFL campaign is without question a potential Super Bowl preview. Thursday Night Football in Week 1 pits the Buffalo Bills against the Los Angeles Rams. Buffalo is a +550 favorite at DraftKings Sportsbook to win the Super Bowl, while Los Angeles is a +550 third-choice to win the NFC.

With kickoff set for 8:20 pm ET on NBC, it’s time to take a look at the best touchdown scorer bets to be made for the season opener.

Buffalo Bills touchdown scorer best bet: Gabriel Davis, WR (+155)

The Rams undoubtedly boast a solid defense, but this should still be a decent matchup for Davis. Los Angeles’ best defensive back is Jalen Ramsey, who will have the assignment of matching up with Buffalo’s No. 1 receiver Stefon Diggs. The rest of L.A.’s secondary is relatively young and inexperienced, so Davis should have plenty of opportunities to exploit some holes. He is looking to build on a breakout 2021 season, too, surely chomping at the bit to prove that last year was no fluke.

The 2020 fourth-round pick out of Central Florida was especially hot late. He scored four touchdowns in the last five regular-season games and then went wild in the playoffs, finding the endzone five times across the wild-card and divisional rounds. Four of those — along with 201 yards — came during an overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Josh Allen has to have a ton of confidence in Davis heading into 2022, especially in the red zone.

Los Angeles Rams touchdown scorer best bet: Cam Akers, RB (+130)

Akers made a miraculous recovery from a torn Achilles sustained last July to play in the regular-season finale and all four of the Rams’ playoff games. The 2020 second-round pick out of Florida State understandably didn’t do a whole lot, but he at least emerged unscathed from a health standpoint — while also helping his team win the Super Bowl. With a whole offseason to mend, Akers will be eager to make up for lost time and play a full, productive season in 2022. It should begin with some success against Buffalo.

The Bills allowed the fewest passing TDs in the entire league last year, but they surrendered the fifth-most (tied) scores on the ground (19). I’m expecting a high-scoring affair between two elite offenses, and Akers will likely be a big part of the party.

Anytime Touchdown Scorer FAQs

What does “anytime touchdown scorer” mean?

Anytime touchdown scorer is a popular player prop bet that NFL bettors can wager on throughout the season. But what is it, and how do you win?

As the name suggests, placing a wager on the anytime touchdown scorer market is when you tip a particular player to score a touchdown during a game. This can be a rushing or receiving touchdown for an offensive player, or you can wager on a team’s defense/special teams to score a touchdown by interception return and fumble return or kickoff and punt returns.

If your player or defense scores a touchdown, you win! The odds will differ from player-to-player depending on the sportsbooks’ calculated probability of that player scoring.

Does anytime touchdown scorer include passing touchdowns?

Not for a quarterback, no. A player must get into the endzone, himself, in order to qualify as an anytime touchdown scorer. If a quarterback throws a touchdown pass, only the player who caught it counts as the scorer. If Joe Burrow throws a touchdown pass to Ja’Marr Chase, wagers placed on Evans as an anytime touchdown scorer will cash. However, those placed on Rodgers as an anytime touchdown scorer will not (unless he also runs for a TD). See below for more on what the anytime touchdown scorer market means for quarterbacks.

What does anytime touchdown scorer mean for a QB?

For a wager on a QB to be an anytime touchdown scorer to cash, he must follow the same rules as a running back, tight end, or receiver. He must get into the end zone himself, either as a runner or a pass-catcher.

In the age of the mobile quarterback, QBs such as Allen, Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson and Kyler Murray are often seen rushing in for a touchdown on any given Sunday. And don’t forget the occasional Philly Special, either. QBs can sometimes catch passes for TDs, too.
