It’s on to Week 2 of the 2022 college football season. The marquee matchups may a be a bit fewer and farther in between than they were on opening weekend and the sport now has to share the stage with the NFL, but we should still have a fun schedule of games on our hands. Saturday’s slate will waste no time getting started, as the the biggest game in terms of program prestige is getting started at 12:00 pm ET between the Alabama Crimson Tide and Texas Longhorns.

Let’s take a look at the odds and our expert picks for this SEC-Big 12 matchup. Make sure you also check out our college football picks page, where we provide bets on the side and total for every game involving a Power 5 conference team.

Alabama vs Texas spread prediction: Alabama -20 (-110)

This is a great opportunity for Texas to take a step toward being a national powerhouse again. The Longhorns don’t even have to win outright in order for that to happen; they just need to be competitive. Unfortunately for the home team, it almost certainly won’t win and it probably won’t even be competitive. Alabama is the No. 1 team in the nation and although a 55-0 drubbing of Utah State means nothing, head coach Nick Saban’s squad has a game under its belt and should already be a well-oiled machine come this weekend. Bryce Young rushed for 100 yards in the opener and now he faces a UT defense that surrendered 57 points to lowly Kansas in 2021. On the other side of the ball, the Crimson Tide’s defense — led by linebacker Will Anderson — looks like a force. The Tide allowed only 87 rushing yards per game last season and racked up 57 sacks (17.5 courtesy of Anderson). Expect the visitors to dominate on both sides of the ball for a win and cover.

Alabama vs Texas over/under prediction: Over 65.5 (-110)

Assuming Alabama doesn’t make any silly mistakes on offense (and that should be a safe assumption with Young under center), it should score early and often. The question is how much Texas can contribute to the game total. If the Longhorns can get to the 20 mark, that should be enough to push the total over. They can probably do it — even if they kind of get some help in the form of garbage-time points at the expense of Alabama’s backup defense. Bijan Robinson is good enough to produce even against the likes of the Crimson Tide and freshman quarterback Quinn Ewers has plenty of potential. Of course, ‘Bama is going to shoulder the load. I can’t see the ‘Horns containing the Tide. Young and company can expected to take this one over the total.
