Pickswise’s coverage of the upcoming football season has already begun in earnest. In this particular piece we are breaking down the Defensive Rookie of the Year Award, which was won in 2022 by New York Jets cornerback Sauce Cornerback. He is preceded on impressive list by Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons (2021) and Washington Commanders DE Chase Young. Other recent winners are Los Angeles Rams DT Aaron Donald (also now a 3-time DPOY winner) and San Francisco 49ers DE Nick Bosa (also the 2022 DPOY).

NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year best bet: Jalen Carter, Philadelphia Eagles (+750)
The Philadelphia Eagles’ defense has basically turned into the University of Georgia. To be abundantly clear, that is not a bad thing. UGA is the 2-time defending National Champion and its defense was utterly dominant over the past 2 seasons. The Bulldogs just recycle first-round star after first-round star, many of whom have been drafted by the Eagles. Carter slipped to the #9 pick in the NFL Draft (you know you are good when going #9 qualifies as “slipping”) mainly due to some off-the-field issues, but there no questions about his on-field talent. The 6’3’’, 300-pounder will be part of an Eagles defense that is loaded in plenty of places so it’s not like he will be seeing double-teams. Playing in Philly should be a perfect opportunity for Carter.
NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year longshot play: Jack Campbell, Detroit Lions (+2000)
You definitely want to shop around when it comes to futures odds, which can vary in major way from book to book (especially those of the longshot variety). For example, Campbell is going off at +1400 at DraftKings. When you can get him at +2000 at FanDuel, it’s an opportunity that should be taken. Detroit is a good spot for the former Iowa standout, as he can come in and play right away but at the same time it is an improving defense – and an on-the-rise team overall – that will test opposing offenses in various areas. Campbell racked up 265 total tackles to go along with 4 interceptions over his final 2 seasons with the Hawkeyes. The guy was all over the place, and I don’t expect that to change with the Lions.
