Previous Kentucky Derby winners

The 2022 Kentucky Derby produced an amazing story as 80/1 longshot Rich Strike, which had only got into the field the day before the race when a rival was scratched, came through late to cause a major upset. He was the winner with the biggest odds since Donerail won at 91/1 in 1913. Rich Strike did not contest the Preakness Stakes, becoming the first healthy Derby winner to miss that race since 1985.

The 2021 race was won by Mandaloun for trainer Brad Cox, while the 2020 Kentucky Derby was won by Authentic. In 2019 it was taken by Country House after Maximum Security was disqualified. Justify was the winner of the 2018 Kentucky Derby, and became the first horse since Apollo in 1882 to win it without having raced as a 2-year-old.

Secretariat set the record for the fastest-ever Kentucky Derby win in 1973, clocking a time of 1:59.4.

How to bet on the Kentucky Derby in 2023

You can bet on the Kentucky Derby by using a number of racebooks, such as TVG, FanDuel Racing and TwinSpires. They will have a variety of different betting markets, where you can bet on a horse to win or place, which means your bet is a winner if the horse finishes in the top 2, 3 or 4 depending on how many runners there are. You can also place an exacta bet, where you have to successfully predict the horses that finish 1st and 2nd, or a trifecta — which is similar to an exacta but you have to predict the horse that finishes 3rd, as well.
