Marte Olsbu Roeiseland had a problem with her rifle, Tiril Eckhoff had to ski 3 penalty loops and Tarjei Boe was very sore after a heavy collision in training the previous day. But none of that was enough to stop Norway claiming gold in the mixed relay – the opening event on the biathlon program at the 2022 Winter Olympics.
Johannes Thingnes Boe outsprinted the French and Russian anchormen in a thrilling finish to that contest, and the Norwegians are heavy favorites to follow up in the men’s relay, due to start at 1:30am ET on Monday night.
Winter Olympics men’s biathlon 4 x 7.5km relay best bets: France to win (+380); Germany to win a medal (+125)
While the Boe brothers have continued to pick up medals in the individual events, Sturla Holm Laegreid and Vetle Sjastad Christiansen have been a bit disappointing. World Cup leader Quentin Fillon Maillet has been the star of men’s biathlon at Beijing 2022 with 2 golds and a silver in the 3 individual events.
While the rest of the French team have been well below his form, they have been close enough to suggest they could grab gold in this event if the Boe brothers aren’t able to carry Norway to victory.
While the German men are yet to pick up a medal in biathlon at these games, they were on the podium in the last 2 World Cup men’s relays and their 4 athletes have been consistent enough in China to suggest they can keep that run going.
