Who had the best regular-season record in the AFC last season? The Bills? The Chiefs? The eventual AFC champions the Bengals? No, it was the Tennessee Titans thanks to their 12-5 record and head-t0-head win over Kansas City. It’s easy to forget that now because they wasted the huge opportunity they had earned by losing at home to Cincinnati in the divisional round, but it happened. It really was a costly loss for the Titans, because the circumstances that led to them getting the #1 seeding for the playoffs despite their shortcomings are going to be hard to replicate.

The Titans impressed everyone by not throwing in the towel when Derrick Henry got injured and still negotiating a path to a 12-5 record. It won Mike Vrabel the Coach of the Year award. But they had Henry back for the playoffs and blew their big chance. Titans fans will be thinking they have a great opportunity to do it again if they get a full season of Henry, but things don’t always work out that way.

Tennessee Titans 2021 season recap

The 2021 season didn’t look like it would end up being a memorable year when the Titans lost 38-13 to the Cardinals in Week 1, but they won 8 of their next 9 games to force their way to the front of the AFC playoff race. Star man Derrick Henry suffered a foot injury in the Week 8 win over Indianapolis that kept him out for the rest of the regular season, and D’Onta Foreman, Dontrell Hilliard, Adrian Peterson and Jeremy McNichols all led their rushing attack in at least one game. There were low points, not least losses to the Jets and Texans, but the Titans finished strongly, beating the 49ers, Dolphins and Texans in their last 3 games to clinch the #1 seed. Henry was back with 66 yards and a TD in their playoff game, but the Titans lost 19-16 to the Bengals as Ryan Tannehill was picked off 3 times.

Tennessee Titans 2022 NFL season predictions

The reason for all the big odds and gloomy forecasts for the Titans this season is that they look like classic overachievers due for a heavy dose of regression. They went 6-1 in regular-season games decided by 3 or fewer points, so their record might have looked very different with just a few more breaks going against them. There are also questions over their offensive weapons. Top receiver AJ Brown is gone, along with veteran Julio Jones and in theory they have been replaced by veteran Robert Woods and rookie Treylon Burks, but Woods is coming off a knee injury and it could take Burks time to find his feet. New tight end Austin Hooper underwhelmed in Cleveland and concerns remain about the offensive line. Another element was introduced when the Titans drafted QB Malik Willis, which could understandably affect Tannehill.

The Titans defense has some real strengths, not least defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons, pass-rushers Harold Landry and Bud Dupree and safety Kevin Byard, but they could really use cornerback Caleb Farley staying healthy in his second year. It’s not hard at all to see the Titans failing to live up to last season’s unexpected heights.

Best bet: Tennessee Titans to miss the playoffs (-120)

For all the reasons above that suggest it might be tricky for the Titans to repeat last season’s success, the best bet on them this season could be to back them not to make the playoffs. The Colts look to have the roster that could wrest the divisional title back from them, even if the Texans are not yet ready to challenge and the Jaguars have a lot of improving to do. That leaves the Titans in the thick of what looks set to be a wild battle for wild-card places. A horrible November schedule that sees them facing the Chiefs, Broncos, Packers and Bengals could go a long way to deciding their fate and probably not in a positive way.

Tennessee Titans season record predictions

Another double-digit win tally looks tough for Tennessee this season and even getting a winning record could be tough. It wouldn’t be a surprise if the Titans slip to something like an 8-9 record.
